      Retail & Hospitality Compensation

      Operations Officer

My paycheck usually gets generated on Tuesdays, and even though I know it’s going to be the same, I still check it. After that, I tell my husband how much I’m getting this pay period, and then he shares his number too. That’s when I sometimes start feeling small in comparison. It brings up a bit of insecurity and makes me feel like I’m not doing enough. My partner is always supportive, but the feeling still lingers sometimes. Do you ever compare your salary with your partner’s or even friends’?

I don't think we need to mention exactly what the pay check is for it to be obvious that this isn't a great situation regardless.... This post isn't about pay though. It's about the work vs life debate which hits VERY differently when you work in certain industries. As a doctor, I quickly realised that the “working to live” debate was essentially a non-starter & that something needed to change for me to feel better about my work-life. I’ve listed a few things that I changed in the comments!

I just got super lowballed and I am having a hard time understanding how based on conversations, interviews, market comp ranges, and my experience and skill level. I need a paycheck at this point in the job search but I can’t be undervalued. This is an HR-controlled offer and Leadership only needs to be involved for approvals. The hiring manager will be my direct supervisor. I am requesting them to come up $10-15 hourly and outline the bonus plan in my offer letter because it was shared verbally

I’ve been working at my recent job for about 2 years now as a bartender. When I first started there we started out with a pay of $5 hour plus tips. So getting a good paycheck every 2 weeks really helped out alot. Then recently we all noticed our checks were getting smaller and didn’t really think much of it. Then a few days ago I happened to look at my check stub and he had changed all of our hourly wage down to $2 without informing any of us so my question is.. Is that even legal?

Compensation is more than a paycheck. It’s the skills you build, the confidence you gain, the relationships that shape you, and the opportunities your growth unlocks. When your work aligns with your values, you earn meaning, autonomy, and influence. Financial pay matters, but the real compensation is everything that grows you and carries you into your next chapter. --- If you want, I can craft an even tighter version that hits 450–480 characters to give you buffer space.

For the people who make way past mid six figures and onwards, if you are living paycheck to paycheck..why is that the case? I know some articles out there that mention folks who make 200k+ are living paycheck to paycheck and the only thing I can imagine are my coworkers who are living way past their means (renting in an expensive area/going out every week -- several times a week). Why else would people be in this category?

It’s tough out there. I was recently offered a job that combines Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Payroll — all for $20 an hour. That kind of pay doesn’t match the level of responsibility or skill required. It’s frustrating to see companies undervaluing essential roles while expecting top performance. To everyone grinding through this job market: stay strong and know your worth. #JobSearch #Accounting #Payroll #FairPay #KnowYourWorth

I was laid off recently. I got 6 weeks “bridge pay” but had to sign a doc stating that if I find full time work before my bridge pay is up, I need to tell the AI bots at VML so they don’t have to pay it. But really, do I? What about for tax purposes and all that? Is that a legally binding document? The double dip paychecks would help my family finances a lot.

Knowing your in-hand salary isn’t just helpful — it’s a game-changer when it comes to salary negotiation. I recently found this free tool that calculates your exact take-home salary after taxes, PF, and all deductions 👇 https://www.gainscalculator.com It really helped me understand what I’ll actually get in hand — and made me way more confident during negotiations. Try it once. Thank me later! 😉

When you got your very first paycheck after just entering the workforce, what did you initially do with that money and has the way you handled your income changed since then? I feel like that first paycheck is usually the first time a lot of people are getting a large influx of cash from a job so wondering if people spent it treat themselves or how they decided to end up saving it.
