      Job Hunting in Tech

How do you spot companies that genuinely support ramp-up instead of just saying they do? I’m seeing more roles promise learning on the job, but then quietly expect you to be fully productive from week one. During interviews, they talk about ramp-up and support, but also mention aggressive deadlines and lean teams. That contradiction makes me nervous. It feels like you’re supposed to learn everything instantly without slowing anyone down. I’ve been burned before by roles that talked growth but delivered pressure.

I apologize if this will sound ungrateful, especially in today's climate, but I'd love some perspective please. I've been with my current company just about 5 yrs. I was just promoted to a supervisor, after repeatedly asking about progression and development (recently the dept has been stable but years ago it was losing employees in droves). I am not as happy as I once thought I'd be. They made it seem more a formality than a promotion and that leaves me frustrated. (tbc in comments).

There’s a point in a lot of tech roles where growth slows, even if performance is solid. I’ve hit moments where nothing was “wrong,” but nothing was stretching me either. In hindsight, that was usually the signal to ask harder questions about scope and trajectory, not just wait it out. How do you tell the difference between a temporary plateau and a sign it’s time to move on and kick off the job search? I’m also wondering if this is a manger issue rather than things I might be doing.

I lateraled about six months ago for better hours and a $30k pay bump. And while I’m not pulling all-nighters anymore, I can’t shake the feeling that I’ve stepped backwards. The firm name doesn’t carry the same weight, the work is less complex, and there’s no clear training or advancement path. I thought I’d be happier with a bit more balance, but now I just feel… stalled. Is this just adjustment anxiety, or should I start quietly planning my next move now?

As I get further along in my career, I’ve noticed my drive to keep climbing isn’t as strong as it used to be, and I’m not sure how to interpret that. I can’t tell if my priorities are genuinely changing or if I’m just worn down by the lack of upward mobility at my current company. It feels hard to tell the difference between contentment and quiet frustration. Would love to hear if others have gone through something similar or how they made sense of it.

I find that I’m a person that’s driven by growth both in skillet and monetarily. In the past few years it’s led to me job hopping a bit. Those of you who are all about growth, are you ever happy in your role and comp level? How does a person settle down and not jump for the next best shiny role? I really struggle with this after being loyal to a firm for 10 years then jumping 3 times after, never finding a spot I enjoyed as much as the first.

Growth Isn’t Always Comfortable One thing I’ve realized in my career journey is that growth often comes disguised as discomfort. The roles that stretch you, the feedback that challenges you, and the moments you feel uncertain—those are usually the turning points. If you’re in a phase where things feel unclear or tough, you’re probably evolving. Stay consistent. Stay open to learning. The results will follow

Hi, I was invited to do a video interview for the Legal Administrative Assistant position with Progressive and would like to know if anyone knows what questions they will be asking. It would be really helpful to know because I have been applying for jobs for several months now and would love to have a great chance of making it past this interview. Any feedback or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

How do you know when it’s time to lateral? I can’t tell if I’ve hit a real ceiling or if I’m just restless. The money’s fine, the people are decent, but I feel like I’m repeating the same year on loop. There are no new clients, no real challenges, and definitely no growth. Everyone says “don’t move just to move,” but what if staying still is the real risk? Torn.

Has anyone experienced a boss becoming so reliant on you that it starts to limit your growth? Almost as if your progression threatens their own plans. I’m realising my future and my boss’s expectations may not be aligned — and that’s… uncomfortable. He thinks we will exit as a duo and go somewhere as a package. That can’t happen as I want progression.
