      Career Pivot

      Creative Director
      3mo

My scope has crept way past my original scope upon hiring. My manager admits that I am and have been doing VP level strategy work under a director title for the past few years. I’ve hit a ceiling with taking on scope to support needs/achieve growth, while not having a formal title that matches my current scope. Growth discussions were happening, but with higher up changes — things have been radio silent. Any advice for managing through this environment now, while exploring other opportunities?

RFI my tax law/corp frens: (1) potential exit options for tax associates; (2) how much firm experience normally needed; (3) how much do the exit options normally pay; (4) better to have broad tax law experience or to specialize in specific types of tax? (5) how long does it normally take to get a decent grasp of tax concepts - I don’t seem to find time to understand/study the law bcos so much of my time is assisting on deals (and also I can’t bill for it) Thank you in advance 🙏

I’m at a small startup where I’m doing everything: backend, infra, DevOps, even some light product work. But my title is “Software Engineer” and I’m being paid like a mid-level dev, $115k with no equity refresh in sight. I like the team and the work, but I can’t shake the feeling that I’m giving senior-level effort for junior-to-mid comp. How do you even begin to price your work when your title doesn’t reflect your actual scope? What would you do if you were in my shoes?

Asking for fixed price without fixed scope creates false confidence. On paper, it looks like risk transfer. In reality, risk is only postponed. Assumptions multiply, change requests grow, and relationships become defensive. Fixed price works only when scope, data quality, integrations, and decision rights are stable. Otherwise, the project turns into contract management instead of delivery. Price certainty without scope certainty is an illusion.

I’m currently doing the job of someone who left six months ago while also doing my own job. Nobody announced it. It just quietly became mine through a series of “can you just handle this one” requests. I have a feeling the conversation about compensation is going to need to come from me. How do you have the conversation about scope creep when it crept up so gradually nobody noticed?

’m noticing how responsibilities creep into roles without any formal change in title or pay. What started as “can you help with this real quick?” has become a permanent part of my workload. No conversation, no compensation, just more expectations layered on over time. It’s hard to pinpoint when it crossed the line, but it definitely did. How do you push back on scope creep?

How do you spot a role that’s actually two jobs in one? I’ve come across a few postings where the scope looks broad — legal + compliance + privacy + ops — and it’s hard to tell if it’s a great opportunity or just too much for one person. For those who’ve been there — how do you identify when a role is realistically scoped vs. overloaded before accepting it?

would you rather be a consultant stuck in an infinite loop of scope creep but with it’s with a client that is incredibly attractive physically and has enough charisma to convince you to leave everything behind to be with them but by doing so you end up giving up everything you have today including all of the respect of your friends and family or be forced to play league of legends 12 hours a day

I got a raise recently. Great, right? But now I’m leading team meetings, mentoring two junior folks, and being looped into strategy sessions. None of that was part of the original scope. I’m trying to be a team player, but it’s starting to feel like a slow-motion promotion without the title or comp. How do you push back on scope creep when it’s not tied to more pay?
