Looking for some words of wisdom in regard to navigating this atrocious job market. Is this a numbers game - a spray and pray approach where you cast a wide net? Or, does a more measured approach involving referrals and networking carry more weight? Speaking to folks who have been on the search, referrals really don’t seem to carry as much weight as before. Short of someone vouching for you at the highest of levels, what are some best practices to secure employment in this market?

Hi all, I am completely new to Glassdoor & I have a ton of Customer Service experience from the service desk at Home Depot to CSR with Farmers, State Farm, another insurance agency & front desk receptionist at 2 different hotels. I’ve applied to several different State Farm positions on here & now it seems like that’s mostly the CSR positions that pop up. First question, has anyone got hired from here or know anyone that has? And 2, can you tell me if this platform gets into an algorithm?

In today’s market, your network is just as important as your résumé. Over half of workers land roles through connections, yet most people never reach out. If you’re job searching, don’t go it alone—tap your weak ties, ask for introductions, and stay visible. The right conversation can open a door you didn’t even know existed. How are you building your network right now? https://www.forbes.com/sites/tracybrower/2026/03/24/a-successful-career-needs-a-strong-network-heres-how-to-build-one/

.I am an IT graduate at SLIIT with hands-on experience in .NET, C#, and MSSQL, gained during my internship at Ocean Lanka Pvt Ltd, a leading apparel manufacturing company. As part of my responsibilities, I developed a night patrol scheduling system to improve resource coordination and also created a Crystal Report for the finished fabric gate pass, integrated into the ERP system to streamline warehouse gate operations and enhance reporting accuracy.

Have you ever looked for a job in a secondary market? If so, how did you build your new network to find that job? I need to relocate for personal reasons to a smaller city in the Midwest, and my network is almost exclusively based in NYC and the West Coast. I’m unlikely to have a relo opportunity with my current company. LinkedIn shows pretty much no connections in/near my target city. So, I’m starting pretty much from scratch.

      Accounting Exit Opportunities

Our company is switching from QuickBooks to NetSuite, and as the only person who knows how to use an Excel VLOOKUP, I’ve somehow become the project lead. My actual job responsibilities haven't decreased, so I’m basically doing a full software implementation in my spare time. Has anyone leveraged an ERP implementation into a high-paying Systems Accounting or FinOps role, or am I just doing free labor?

I’ve been in consulting for a while but always at smaller firms where things were stable and internal. Now that I’m trying to make a move, I’m realizing how much of this industry runs on networking and I never really built one. I wasn’t very outgoing in school or early in my career, and I honestly still find reaching out pretty awkward. How do you even start building connections this late in the game?

Where have you found the most success in networking and finding a new job? I have been trying to get out to some events in Chicago but it seems like everyone is in the same boat trying to find a new gig vs get you somewhere further along your path. Is there any other better ways out there or do I just need to keep connecting?

One thing I’ve learned is that networking in sales isn’t just about collecting contacts, but building genuine relationships. Early in my career, I focused on quantity over quality and soon realized that’s a dead-end. How do you approach networking in sales, and what’s helped you create meaningful connections?
