Am I going to be worked to the bone if I join a group where I’d be the only associate supporting partners and counsels? It’s a subgroup of a corporate practice that focuses on a specialized area with great exit options and operates as a support group for other transactional and/or lit groups (like tax or IP). It’s a newly created position meaning there aren’t any previous associates that I can ask about their experience. I really like type of work the team does but worried about being miserable.

Just about every major industry in the United States has some form of organized representation. Healthcare, law enforcement, sports, hospitality—you name it. Each of these fields has established organizations or unions that protect workers, advocate fair treatment, and keep management accountable. So why doesn’t this exist for IT? IT Pros drive every modern business. Our expertise powers every project, every initiative, every digital transformation. Yet our field has no unified front. Thoughts?

Been researching with no luck… any tips on best way to do individual orders for a group? I’ve looked at ezCater and Uber Eats, i thought about Relish but it seems like you need to sign up and do a program with them. Have a meeting for a group of 10 on a Friday, not everyone eats breakfast so instead of ordering large trays for 10, I’d like to send people a link the day before where they can order their individual meal by a certain time and it will be delivered by set time on Friday AM. TIA!

I’ve been at a firm for 6 months. The group I work w/ is huge. I report directly to a Sr FA. I’m very good at strategy - I have Asperger’s . I see patterns, #’s etc. What I struggle w/ is emotional intelligence, I don’t understand sarcasm, etc. I notice that the FA, takes all the credit for my work. I come up w/ ideas but don’t know how to articulate that to the group so this jerk runs w/ it. He presents it like, I had Mark do this, etc. How do I approach this?

I recently joined a new firm and while everyone’s technically nice, there’s a clear “in group” on every project. Jokes I don’t get, Slack threads I’m not tagged in, impromptu coffee chats I only hear about after the fact. It’s not toxic, but it’s definitely isolating. I’m trying not to force connections or be that person who pushes too hard to fit in, but I also don’t want to stay on the outside. How do you actually build real relationships across teams like this?

My coworker (Dir) and I (Assoc Dir) both report to our manager (Sr Dir) who reports to the head of a group. Our work is more or less the same - I’m not entirely sure what he does differently vs me but he has more YOE total. Can I make a push for Dir within this same group? If not, what can I do to show boss(es) I am ready? Coming from consulting btw where promotions are time-based and checklist-based, so new to the industry ways of working

What kind of jobs do folks in this group have? What kind of companies, organizations, and law firms (with as much specificity as you’d like)? I do environmental work in big law (mostly project siting and related litigation, but also some deal work). I am looking to pivot. I am interested in doing regulatory compliance for a company or some sort of environmental consulting group, but I’m also curious to see what else is out there. Thank you!

How do I know when my group is toxic/when is it time to lateral? I am so burnt out after multiple 2400 years and don’t feel like my group cares at all they’re constantly expecting more from me. Making below market and have the opportunity to make market. At one point I was told I could make partner by my group head but I’m not so sure I want it if this is the cost. I wake up every day hating my job. 4th year.

If a small specialized lit group gets poached by another firm, is it bad to join their group at the already-established firm they went to? They are building it out at the established firm and looking for associates at other firms for now, but not sure if folks have experience with that. Seems like a good way to pivot into a specialty, but worry about the risk too.

Has anyone been iced out after declining to switch practice groups? I’m a fifth year associate in finance, but most of my work has been from M&A since my group has really slowed down. The partners I work with asked me to officially move over. It isn’t a good time for me for a number of reasons, but since sharing that it seems like I’ve been iced out entirely.
