What can I say to my boss (HR Dir) when she asks "What are you working on," when I am actually waiting on her to be available to either a) check in on a task we were just working on or b) ask her for another task. My role has no structure, I just wait for her to give me something. She comes over and I said, "I'm looking at my paystub." Last week I lost hours so it's reasonable for me to look at that. Then she goes, "Well we should be working on something." What can I say without sounding rude?

I’m just so tired of applying for jobs. I was just filling out an application but it has several essay questions like this and I just don’t have the energy. It is Monday morning. You have 3 urgent tasks: (1) A client is asking for a status update that was due Friday. (2) The Project Manager needs you to reschedule a client facing meeting that is scheduled to start in 2 hours. (3) You need to finish a report that is due by the end of the day. In what order do you handle these, and why?

"Why do you want to work for us" is a question that I hate dealing with on an application. I'd like to be honest and respond with "you have a job opening and I'm so broke I'll go to the opening of a can if I can get paid." But instead I need to either have an existential discussion with my id OR copy the description, ask ChatGPT, paste the answer, and hope it doesn't sound too much like AI. I'm mentally exhausted and now I have to write an essay?

Hey everyone, I remember a few posts here about managing task paralysis during the work week. A neurodivergent friend of mine recently built an app called StartSmall:Beat Overwhelm. It is designed for those moments when you know what you need to do but just cannot start, and it gives you one tiny next step to get unstuck. It’s an interesting concept for a productivity app. Thought I would share in case it is helpful to anyone here.

      Interview Tips

Another exercise for experienced interviewees. What's a great way to answer this question? " You open your laptop to start one task, and within ten minutes, you’ve answered three emails, two messages, and forgotten what you originally sat down to do. How do you protect your focus when everything feels urgent?" I love mentioning the Eisenhower matrix, but is it too cliché at this stage?

What are some ways that your leaders have supported you in stretch tasks or assignments? I ask because I’ve recently partnered with a direct report through one. I had them build the solution architecture document for a solution our team was driving. It’s uncomfortable for them to do but I think it’s healthy to offer opportunities for exposure instead of protecting them from it.

Friendly reminder: Work-life balance during the holidays isn’t about doing zero work. It’s about doing the right amount of work guilt-free, and the right amount of eggnog shame-free. Set the out-of-office. Mute the Slack channel called “URGENT (no really this time).” Eat the extra cookie. Answer one email from the couch in reindeer pajamas if you must.

You open your laptop to start one task, and within 10 minutes, you’ve answered three emails, two teams messages, and forgot what you originally sat down to do. How do you protect your focus when everything feels urgent? Sometimes I get my best work done after 5 once the emails stop and I’m not being interrupted, but I’m trying to lessen my after hours work.
