      Ask A Recruiter - Law

      Attorney
      2w

I went to an unranked night law school while working full-time, passed the bar on my first try, and have been working under a successful attorney doing family law for two years. Now, I want to transition into a mid-sized firm's trust and estates practice for more stability and mentorship. I can feel the elitism the second recruiters look at my law school tier, completely ignoring my experience. How do I get past the gatekeepers when my practical skills are actually ahead of my peers?

My Partner I have worked with the past few years is moving groups due to a recent reorg. The new group is risk and regulatory and doesn’t necessarily sit within my interests. The projects I’ve worked on in the past are not risk and reg. Year end reviews will also be with a different group I want to continue working with this Partner as he has always had my back, but I’m not sure if this move is the right one for me. I am just struggling with what to do as I am in a promotion year

Hi, have a Question specific to EY: Are your service line partners not part of the promotion discussions? I did not get promoted and some PPMDs I know are shocked / some say that it doesn’t make sense / some are worried I’ll leave, etc, but aren’t they the group that made the decision to not promote me? Kind of confused by their reaction to be honest. They are not junior partners - they are seasoned partners heavily involved in the sector/sl.

What kind of jobs do folks in this group have? What kind of companies, organizations, and law firms (with as much specificity as you’d like)? I do environmental work in big law (mostly project siting and related litigation, but also some deal work). I am looking to pivot. I am interested in doing regulatory compliance for a company or some sort of environmental consulting group, but I’m also curious to see what else is out there. Thank you!

REMOTE TAS Curious to hear the perspective of those that work in fully remote TAS/FDD groups (CBIZ, etc). How is the pace? Travel? Do you feel as though you have same opportunities as traditional groups? Also the risk that these fully remote groups get fully shifted to India - do you feel like that is a concern? Or you think always will be some presence in US? Appreciate any perspective. Thanks!

Anyone on the AA Gold corp promo? To keep Gold, I need to earn 10k Loyalty Points in 4mo. I did a cross-coast RT that only got 1.5k Loyalty Points. So one would need to fly 6 RT cross-coasts + earn another 1k LP to hit the lowest target. Seems like a filter for biz travelers only? But then again, biz travelers don't need any help to reach status. So curious who's the target market lol.

If a small specialized lit group gets poached by another firm, is it bad to join their group at the already-established firm they went to? They are building it out at the established firm and looking for associates at other firms for now, but not sure if folks have experience with that. Seems like a good way to pivot into a specialty, but worry about the risk too.

I’m almost a third year in a securities role and need a change. I think I may want to switch practice groups entirely, any other associates here have any advice to offer for making a lateral move with a practice group change? I feel like I am still junior enough to do this and don’t want to miss out on my window.

I’m a junior at a V20 looking to retool (firm screwed me over when it came to practice group). Should I use a recruiter or get referrals? I’m lucky enough that I have a strong network and can get referred at several shops, but I’ve never done this before and don’t want to screw this up.

What is the lateral market like for tech trans groups? Mid-level at a technology transactions / commercial contracts / IP specialist group at one of the typical Silicon Valley firms. I can sense I'm being pushed out. Just trying to know what to expect once they cut me loose.
