      Salaries in Tech

I found out our VP makes 8x what I do... and while I don’t expect us to earn the same, I’m the one doing the late-night deploys, triaging bugs, and shipping features. It hit harder than I expected. I’ve always wanted more transparency around pay, but now I’m wondering if some info just makes you feel worse. I’m proud of the work I do, but it’s hard not to feel underappreciated. Is transparency still helpful if it leaves you disillusioned?

How do you all feel about salary transparency in our profession? I work at a firm where we don’t have a cohort compensation model and I found out someone hired at the same level made $50-75k more than me over the last two years (it was $75k and now $50k - so I am catching up). However, it feels unfair since I bring in revenue (they do not), I have higher billable hours & realization, and I participate in the firm for a wide range of initiatives. I find it grossly unfair.

My firm talks a big game about pay transparency, but all it’s really done is expose how uneven things are. Associates with the same title are on completely different packages, and when people see the gaps, resentment builds fast. The problem is, we can point out the inequity, but leadership doesn’t move to fix it. Do you think pay transparency in law actually helps, or does it just fuel frustration?

Salary transparency is a topic that's generating a lot of debate. Some see it as a way to promote fairness and equality, while others fear it might create unnecessary tensions within teams. Many countries are introducing new salary transparency laws — but not all companies are excited about it. Open salaries: Does it lead to more fairness or more conflict? Would you like all salaries to be made public?

      Salary Negotiations

The company I work for has standard pay bands for each role. I thought I would like the transparency, as opposed to my last company where our salaries were all over the place, (some people doing the same job had ~$20k differences) but then I realized how much the standardization inhibits my ability to negotiate raises. Are there any secrets to negotiating above the standards or am I just stuck?

Is pay transparency actually a good thing? My CEO announced transparency in pay and now half my sales team is furious with each other. Everyone found out that the quietest guy on the team negotiated a much higher base during a desperation hire period. Now my top performers are in my office demanding immediate raises to match him, and I don't have the budget to do it.

Salary transparency shouldn’t end at the job posting. If a company lists a range but then offers below it, that’s not negotiation—it’s misalignment. As a hiring manager, I’ve always believed the number shared upfront should be the floor, not a ceiling. Have you experienced this? How did you handle it? And for leaders here: What’s your policy when the offer can’t meet the posted band?

Imagine being told six months in advance that you might be laid off. Aki Ito shared a story about a CEO who did exactly that, showing that transparency can still have a place in hard moments. Would you appreciate that kind of transparency too, or would it just add more stress?

I'm applying for a job but I already know that I am going to be abroad when the interviews are scheduled. Should I state this up-front in my application to show transparency or should I hold off and only bring it up if I get shortlisted for the interview? I was thinking of stating I would be available for a remote interview or in-person on a different date.

I came across an article discussing the rise of companies adopting transparent salary policies. The idea is to eliminate pay gaps and promote equity. This shift can potentially empower employees to negotiate better salaries, knowing what their peers earn. Do you think transparency in salaries could lead to fairer compensation across the board? What are your thoughts?
