Am I going to be worked to the bone if I join a group where I’d be the only associate supporting partners and counsels? It’s a subgroup of a corporate practice that focuses on a specialized area with great exit options and operates as a support group for other transactional and/or lit groups (like tax or IP). It’s a newly created position meaning there aren’t any previous associates that I can ask about their experience. I really like type of work the team does but worried about being miserable.

8th year M&A associate, and the only one in my office in my practice group. I’ve grown increasingly dissatisfied with my group for several reasons (never had a midlevel staffed on any deal of mine from end to end, firm’s group doesn’t do many transactions in this city’s largest industry and therefore see difficulties growing a practice). Am I insane for considering lateraling, or even going in-house? Obviously no guarantee, but have gotten impressions door to partnership here is open if wanted

How do people lateral and get integrated? I lateraled from the government to big law 6 months ago. In the government I did some tasks which above my year here and other tasks in my new job are new. My group is on the small size so even though it’s free market there’s not tons of places to go to ask for work and also there’s not lots of associates they can give work to. We’re definitely super slow right now as a group. How do I try to get work in other groups? Im a fourth year.

I just lateraled about 2 months ago from a Chambers 1 group to an unranked group (newer team) and I already feel like I made a mistake. Everyone is nice but I feel like I don’t get the variety of work I want, the group is disorganized and uncommunicative, and it feels like a step down from what I was doing. Do I really need to tough it out for a year or can I start seriously looking 6 months in? I was at my previous firm for four years and this is my first lateral.

How do you meet and from a group of people to hang out with in NYC? Moved last year, I have different friends that I meet once a quarter for dinner, and that’s about it. They are all married so they don’t really go out or have the need to. I have no regular friend groups here and would love to form one as it gets pretty lonely sometimes. My job is fully remote which makes it harder to meet new people.

How do you handle a boss who calls you “family,” but somehow that means they expect you to be available 24/7? I’m all for being dedicated, but I’m getting midnight texts, weekend calls, and constant guilt trips if I don’t reply instantly. I’m trying to set boundaries without being labeled “not a team player.” What would you actually say when they message you at 12AM with “quick questions”?

Mid-level is actively trying to push me (junior) out of a matter and get his friend involved in my place. Would you bring this up with a partner? I've been working on this matter for months; now the group is slow and the mid-level is trying to shift work away from me to his friend (who has much less knowledge and experience on this matter). Do I say something or suck it up?

New at work but need to learn boundaries. Any key phrases I can use? I’m the youngest / newest hire and feel like the big joys take advantage of me. If the group goes out to lunch, guess who has to stay behind? If they leave early to network, I’m left behind. Someone has to cover orders if clients call.
