At NewsGuard, we believe that the problem of online misinformation is best addressed not by artificial intelligence, but by human intelligence. We use journalism to rate and review thousands of news and information sites—from major media brands to niche blogs to hoax sites that spread falsehoods to generate ad clicks—using nine journalistic criteria and a rigorous, transparent process. By creating a standard for understanding the credibility of news sources online, we aim to restore trust and accountability to journalism.
NewsGuard's trust ratings and reviews of thousands of news and information sources are used across a range of industries and use cases to help combat misinformation and promote quality journalism. Search and social media platforms use our ratings to warn users before they post or click on misinformation sources--and to increase the visibility of credible sources in social feeds or search result pages. News aggregators use NewsGuard to ensure they are drawing information from credible sources. Advertisers use NewsGuard to keep their ads off of misinformation sites and to restore advertising to credible news sites.
Educators, researchers, and nonprofit partners use our data to build news literacy skills in students and equip internet users with the tools they need to understand which information to trust. And government agencies, regulators, and global bodies like the World Health Organization use our data to track and combat state-sponsored disinformation efforts aimed at sowing division and discord.
