How Primal Life Organics was founded.
I’m going to be a little vulnerable here. This is a story that I share often, and every time I do, it takes me back to the moment I lost my baby.
The overwhelming sadness.
Disappointment in myself.
Fear that I would never experience motherhood.
Confusion.
Yet hope.
The hope that my miscarriage had a hidden meaning. A reason. Hope that I would “figure out” why it happened to prevent it from happening again..
It was 2007. I was 39 years old when I found myself graduating from anesthesia school. I thought the “stressful” part of life would be behind me (little did I know that compared to what life was to bring me, anesthesia school was breezi!)
I was engaged to my now husband, and because we knew we were going to start a family right away, we eloped to Fiji to get married. On our honeymoon, we got the best gift ever… we became pregnant. Elated and over-joyed, I started my new job as a CRNA and looked forward to motherhood.
But seven weeks into my pregnancy, I lost all signs and instinctively knew I was miscarrying. I was so sad and unprepared for these emotions I was experiencing.
My husband and I were sitting in our favorite restaurant when the inevitable happened. I miscarried. I never expected to see my baby- but there he (she) was. A large head, tiny body and nubs for arms and legs. My heart was still as I held him in the palm of my hand. He looked just like the pictures of a seven week fetus from my pregnancy books. So normal. No apparent problem. No reason for this to happen..
I now realize that I was in shock when this happened- but I do remember one thing.
I made a promise to this little one. I promised that even though he would never take a breath, he touched my life in an unexpected way and I would search for the meaning behind this awful situation and do my best to do something good in this world for him.
I had no idea what that meant, but it was The Promise that created Primal Life.
A few weeks later, we were overjoyed when we discovered that we were pregnant again. The fear, sadness, and excitement rushed through me like wild-fire. I was searching for ways to make myself healthier. We “detoxified” our house, cleaning supplies, laundry detergent and purchased air purifiers…yet I never occurred to check the one thing that impacts health the most.
It wasn’t until week seven of my pregnancy- the same week I miscarried. I was in tune with everything going on or near my body. I needed this pregnancy to get past this week.
Then it happened. I was getting ready for work one morning. Like millions of mornings before, I showered, did my hair and went to put on my moisturizer. That’s when it happened. The moment I realized I was unknowingly and unwillingly poisoning my body and my baby.
I was going to put on a face moisturizer from an “organic” company that I trusted. I flipped the jar over and there they were. Chemicals. Toxins. Poisons.
OMG! I could not believe it. I did what any sane pregnant woman would do. I threw it in the garbage and went to the kitchen in search of something “healthy” to put on my skin. The only thing I could think of using was olive oil. “The women in Italy are beautiful and age gracefully” I thought, so olive oil it was.
But this was no longer about me. This was about my unborn baby. And so I did it… and then I started mixing oils. Then I started adding essential oils. And the miracle happened. My oily and acne infested skin cleared up. It was no longer oily… and I delivered a healthy baby girl on August 28, 2008. Mia which means “mine”
It took me a few years to understand the meaning behind all of this. I now understand the miscarriage was the vehicle to bring about my awareness of just how toxic beauty products are. And because I was open to the idea that there must be something better, 100% safe, and effective, I brought about change. I became the Mother Of A Clean Beauty Movement.
My miscarriage opened my eyes to the poison in our personal care products.

I wrote a guide called How To Be A Clean Beauty Snob because there are so many companies out there pretending to be “safe” or even “safer” (which is not even a word).
