Description The history of Fountain House can be traced back to the early 1940s, at Rockland State Hospital in Orangeburg, New York. While at Rockland, 10 patients formed a group that met in a “club room,” where they shared their stories, read, painted, and participated in social functions. Unbeknownst to them at the time, this group would soon serve as the foundation for what would later become Fountain House, and the trailblazing concept of the clubhouse model for people living with serious mental illness (SMI).
