Description The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) enforces federal laws and regulations relating to alcohol and tobacco diversion, firearms, explosives, and arson. With an annual budget of about $1 billion, the ATF also provides technical expertise, training, and resources to other federal and local law enforcement agencies in its mission to reduce violent crime and prevent terrorism. The ATF was moved from the Department of the Treasury to the Department of Justice in 2003; that year it also added "explosives" to its name, though it still operates under the acronym ATF.
