Mission TOGETHER! is on a Mission: To advance the health & wellbeing of all young people

TOGETHER! has a Vision: All young people are supported, healthy, safe & valued

TOGETHER! leads from our Core Values: Equity, Community mobilization & Systems change
Description TOGETHER!’s work to advance the health and well-being of all young people began in 1989. Still today, TOGETHER! is poised at the cutting edge of youth development, strategically adopting the latest research, best practices and evidence based programs, to help us achieve our vision that all young people are supported, healthy, safe and valued. Our cornerstone programs are: the Community Schools Initiative and the Club House Before-and-After School Program. And we are excited to introduce our new Host Homes Program services beginning January 2022!

Creating lasting equity in health and education takes mobilization of multiple partners to change systems that serve kids and families. Our Community Schools Initiative tackles barriers students and families face to their health, well-being and success. Using the research based national Community Schools model, we transform schools and communities to ensure every child has an equitable opportunity to succeed in school and life. Using a whole child mindset, we mobilize partners and schools to transform systems of care for children. We know from research that health and education are intimately related. Ensuring students graduate from HS and are on track for post-secondary success is an important step in ensuring a lifetime of success, health and well-being. TOGETHER! is currently partnering with Tumwater School District and Olympia School District to implement this model in elementary, middle, and high schools.

TOGETHER!'s Club House places our before and after school programs in communities and schools that need them most. Supplemental learning opportunities are especially vital in communities burdened by poverty, homelessness, hunger, educational disparities and a lack of access to extracurricular activities. We invest in schools with the highest percentage of struggling families to create education equity.

Club House creates programming that youth want to attend - where hands-on, fun creative learning is the norm, at no cost to youth or families. Our before and after school programs engage directly with school building staff, North Thurston School District, and a broad range of local organizations and volunteers from places like Puget Sound Estuarium, Safe Place, South Sound Reading Foundation, Haki Farmers Collective, The Bridge Music Project, local colleges and universities, and others.

Two main models best describe our work: Communities That Care and the Community Schools Model.

Using public schools as hubs, the Community Schools Model brings community based organizations and public services together to offer a coordinated range of supports and opportunities to children, youth and families. Partners work to achieve shared results: Children enter school ready; students attend school regularly; students are engaged in school and the community; families are involved with their children's education; and students succeed academically; students are healthy - physically, socially, and emotionally.

Communities That Care is a science-based public health approach proven to promote healthy youth development and reduce youth health and behavior problems community wide. Developed by Drs. J. David Hawkins and Richard Catalano at the University of Washington, Communities That Care employs the Social Development Strategy to foster young people’s wellbeing through opportunities, skill-building and recognition. In this way, protective factors are strengthened and risk factors are reduced, resulting in healthier kids, families and communities. A rigorous scientific trial of the Communities That Care model demonstrated reductions in rates of youth violence, crime and substance use.
