Mission We make it possible for people in Marin to achieve well-being by providing the vital services they need. Together, we break down the barriers that get in the way of fair and lasting change in service to better outcomes for all.
Description Community Action Marin is Marin County's anti-poverty agency and the largest non-profit provider of services to low-income individuals and families in the county. Designated by the Marin Board of Supervisors as the county’s official antipoverty agency, our mandate is to eliminate the causes and consequences of poverty. We are an independent 501(c)3 and part of the national network of over 1100 Community Action agencies birthed from President Lyndon Johnson’s “War on Poverty.” Created through the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964, our agency began with a commitment to drive equity and self-sufficiency for all. We now serve over 5,000 households and 20,000 people a year throughout the county, with over 200 employees, 10 sites and a budget of $20 million. Our programs facilitate pathways to opportunity, serving those living in poverty and homelessness, children, veterans, elderly, immigrants and non-English speakers. Among our services, we provide access to free and affordable early childhood education, creating a home-away-from-home for over 550 children daily. We cover unexpected financial emergencies so that people keep a roof over their heads and lights on, grow food and strengthen healthy food access, provide job training and opportunities, and care for homeless residents and those living with mental health challenges through mobile outreach teams. We are a champion of the community and a catalyst for change efforts toward self-sufficiency for all in the county and beyond.
Community Action changes people’s lives, embodies the spirit of hope, improves communities, and makes America a better place to live. We care about the entire community, and we are dedicated to helping people help themselves and each other.
