Mission DAWA’s mission is to honor, celebrate, and empower community frontliners (creatives, teachers, social workers, healthcare providers, and service industry workers) and BIPOC-led grassroots organizations by providing direct financial support and culturally relevant health-centered programming. We aim to amplify their contributions, nourishing not only them, but also the communities they serve and represent. We believe in a world where DIVERSITY is a source of strength, AWARENESS normalizes challenging the status quo, WELLNESS is a collective journey, and ACTION means equitable investment of time and resources to historically underrepresented populations.
Description At Diversity Awareness and Wellness in Action (DAWA), we are dedicated to empowering historically marginalized communities in Austin, Texas. Founded in 2019 by Jonathan "Chaka" Mahone, our organization emerged in response to the findings of Austin Mayor Steve Adler’s Task Force on Institutional Racism and Systemic Inequity. Recognizing the urgent need for equitable access to education, economic opportunities, and healthy environments, DAWA was established to reach underserved populations that traditional support systems have often overlooked.
Since our inception, DAWA has experienced significant growth and impact, developing multiple programs that address critical challenges such as housing insecurity, food access, and systemic inequities. Our initiatives, including the DAWA Fund and VISION: 8291, focus on providing direct financial assistance to BIPOC community frontliners—creatives, teachers, social workers, and healthcare providers—while also supporting BIPOC-led grassroots organizations.
DAWA has 4 Programs:
DAWA Fund: Provides direct financial assistance to BIPOC community frontliners, including caregivers, teachers, creatives, social workers, and healthcare providers, addressing urgent needs like housing and food security.
VISION: 8291: Serves as a platform for BIPOC artists and grassroots organizations, raising funds to enhance their capacity and create economic opportunities within underserved communities.
Black Live Music Fund: Supports Black musicians and live music professionals by offering financial resources and performance opportunities to promote representation in the music industry.
DAWA Studios: Offers free access to professional media production facilities for BIPOC creatives and organizations, enabling them to produce high-quality digital content and amplify their voices.
