Pros

The people who organize and help you with your work are incredibly responsive and very friendly The work is flexible, in that there's almost always a lot of orders to pick up and you can pick them up whenever you want. They send you some jobs directly but you also have access to a portal on which you can select anything that you find interesting.

Cons

I have some problems with the wages. While the pay on its face is not terrible, it can vary quite a bit. You get $12 per 1,000 words. However, there is so much variation in the orders that occasionally something that earns you $50 will take you nearly as long as something that earns you $100. There is no consideration whatsoever about job difficulty (aside from the minor bonuses they put on jobs after they go unchosen for so long). Additionally, while 12/1,000 is not terrible, it does feel a bit low when you look at the "Order" page on their website. For example, a 12,000-word job will net you $144. Placing an order for 12,000 words costs $262.80 for a 5-day turnaround and $407.40 for a 2-day turnaround. Of course, your wage does not change based on the turnaround unless they need to put a bonus on something to make editors willing to pick a job up. This means that they are taking anywhere from $118.80 to $263.40 off the job of a job you get just $144 for. Considering they have just a handful of non-editors on staff and a LOT of editors doing jobs, that seems like an unreasonable gap. What was disheartening is that, despite being one of the few businesses that can easily operate during the pandemic, they did not offer any kind of temporary minor pay increase, which could have been helpful for those of us whose family members have been affected.

Thank you for your feedback. I am glad to read you enjoy working with us! I would like to address a few points: 1) Although we pay a flat rate for all orders, editors are allowed to preview the file before accepting/rejecting it. This allows you to evaluate how much work is likely to be involved before you take on a job. The standard in our industry is to not allow editors to preview files before accepting, but we do, as we feel that no one should work on a job that they are not interested in. Dozens of jobs deemed more challenging are given bonuses each week (usually 20-50%). Instead of paying on a sliding scale based on document quality or turnaround time, we choose to offer our editors the maximum financially viable flat rate for all work. 2) As you note, $12/1k is a competitive rate on the higher side of average for this line of work. Across ALL orders (and currencies), the fee paid to editors averages between 55-60% of the total order fee. This is also above the industry standard of 45-50%. From the remaining 40% come costs such as credit card and currency fees (4-7.5% of the total fee), three full time staff salaries, a web developer, and the largest cost of all, online adverting. It is only through scale that the business model works. 3) Regarding your suggestion about a COVID-related pay increase: our workload so far has remained consistent, as have the rates we pay our editors. Given the impact the pandemic has had on the global economy, we are all, indeed, lucky in that respect. Thanks again.

Pros

I really appreciate being able to choose orders from the open market, and the system is fairly streamlined. They have a well-developed handbook that I reference often. The support/management team is very responsive and gives helpful, applicable feedback. They've also supplied me with detailed feedback and answered questions whenever I've sought help. Cambridge Proofreading also has a Slack where you can get virtually any technical or editing question answered if you're stuck; I was already fairly proficient in Word, but I've learned so much from this community! A couple of times I have had a migraine come on or a family emergency that impeded me from meeting a deadline, and the client services manager was gracious about giving me short extensions, though I try not to abuse this. Overall, I think Cambridge Proofreading is an excellent part-time job for any editor and especially for those new to the industry who are trying to learn the ropes. I've already improved exponentially as an editor by having so many experienced folks to learn from.

Cons

The workload naturally ebbs and flows with the academic year, so there are definitely dry spells; I've been told that having more than one gig can compensate for this. As an arts and humanities scholar/editor, I'm not assigned a ton of orders; STEM, business, and the like probably receive more assignments. If you do get assigned orders, you've got to be prompt in checking your email, as they disappear quickly (within an hour or so) to give others the chance to take the order. Sometimes it's anxiety-provoking to try to achieve the 10% insertion rate, since the quality varies hugely from job to job (and some orders are best served by deletions, rather than insertions); I've been scolded twice for this.
