Pros

Let's face it you can't beat the job security and most of the same benefits, some even better as a government job. If you have good department and leadership it can be pretty comfortable, It depends what matters to you, because you will probably have a reasonable experience, not advised or forced to work unpaid or anything. So some of my pros and cons, may truly be opposite someone else.

Cons

Had to make an impact, most jobs don't have autonomy and if you do stay in the job beyond 5 years you'll never get a raise on that job after 5 years except little cola adjustments.. unless the union negotiates increased pay all grades during bargaining. Working in claims is hard, not for everyone and susceptible to burn out, but I expect that's going to be the same at most companies if you are doing front line disability claims. If you aren't in the union, it's pretty much impossible to progress to better jobs, there are like 2 people who people know of who ever did it. Really difficult in almost all cases. If your in Union, even just kind of ok at your job but go to the effort of applying for others, you'll move along fine. I'm speaking as someone not in the union so maybe seems easier to me than it is.
