Pros
Serving the underserved
Court experience
Cons
Low pay
High caseload
High turnover
Little to no support from support staff
The lawyers are the case management system - little to ability to delegate non-legal work to support staff because they either don’t do the work or know how to do the work commensurate with their peers in the private sector. Lawyers work for the support staff, not the other way around - you may be expected to stop doing your actual job to meet support staff demands.
Little control over your schedule
No perks
No bonuses
Little to no chance of advancement
Office politics
Bad building and office spaces
Expectations to be support staff for other agencies and other professionals
Highly reactive job - often scrambling at the last minute, playing therapist, and putting out fires
Marathon court dates
Sick building in an undesirable location
