Pros

I worked as a Speech-Language Pathologist at Pueblo Speech and Neuro and found this to be a very niche role with both significant opportunities and notable challenges. One of the biggest strengths of the position was the ability to work with both adult and pediatric populations in a community that values these services. I gained experience across multiple areas of the field, including complex neurological disorders, and had opportunities to collaborate with other professionals such as physicians, counselors, and social workers. I also appreciated the ability to facilitate group sessions (e.g., aphasia, cognitive, Parkinson’s, and pediatric groups), which is relatively unique and helped build my clinical skill set. That said, my overall experience was that the workload and expectations were difficult to sustain long term (see below). Overall: While I gained valuable clinical experience and felt that I made a meaningful impact on the clients I served, my experience was that the demands of the role (including workload, compensation structure, and expectations) may not be sustainable for everyone. I would encourage prospective employees, especially those early in their careers, to ask detailed questions about scheduling, documentation time, pay structure, and support to determine if this environment aligns with their priorities.

Cons

Workload and hours: During my time there, I found that the schedule was very demanding. Patients were typically seen in short intervals, and I often needed to complete documentation (progress reports, evaluations, re-evaluations, and daily notes) outside of scheduled hours. This frequently meant working early mornings or late evenings. While expectations around scheduling and work-life balance may vary, my personal experience was that maintaining balance was challenging and led to fatigue over time. Compensation structure: The pay-per-visit model, in my experience, made income less predictable. Cancellations directly affected pay, and I felt that maintaining a stable income required keeping a very full schedule, which added pressure. Support and environment: From my perspective, the level of support and leadership presence was limited at times. I often felt a high level of independence was expected, which may be difficult for clinicians who are newer to the field or seeking consistent mentorship. Turnover: I observed staff turnover during my time there, including both clinical and administrative roles. In my opinion, this is something prospective employees may want to ask about when evaluating the position. Time off and boundaries: The lack of paid time off was a significant consideration for me. Taking time away from work could create financial strain and added stress. I also personally felt that maintaining clear work-life boundaries was challenging within this environment.
