Strong research environment hindered by poor management communication - Postdoctoral Research Scientist University of Oxford Employee Review

Pros

Strong research environment with access to resourses and international collaborations. Opportunities to work on impactful projects , with exposure to advanced analytical tools and methods.

Cons

My experience under direct line management was challenging, with inconsistencies between verbal guidance and written expectations that created confusion around responsibilities. Communication and management style made it difficult to progress work effectively, particularly across multiple projects with shifting timelines. There were also concerns around fairness and consistency within the immediate team environment, and limited support when concerns were raised, which had a negative impact on wellbeing.

Pros

I worked at organic chemistry department. Experience was really good, a lot of seminars, opportunities to present your work. Staff is very friendly. Amazing NMR facility. Teaching opportunities.

Cons

MS heavily outdated. Even though it is a top institution, the pay is the same as around the UK - low for research staff compared to other countries. Other positions are paid quite well with good benefits.

Pros

Plenty of short-term FTCs available for graduates to undertake alongside coursework.

Cons

Administrative processes across most departments are decentralised and often disorganised. Employees frequently need to proactively monitor and follow up on required paperwork and payment processing.
