Pros
Many wonderful people in the congregation and volunteer teams who genuinely love God and want to serve faithfully.
The worship ministry is full of gifted, sincere individuals who truly care about what they do.
Cons
During my time on staff, I experienced a pattern that, in my view, reflected spiritual and emotional manipulation rather than healthy leadership. When I voiced concerns about demanding and entitled behavior of a high-influence volunteer couple - who were also large donors - was told to “keep your mouth shut” and “not make waves.” When I continued to relay to leadership the demands of the couple and that the wife was demanding to be scheduled on a certain frequency and needed to the lead vocal when she was scheduled it created a challenging situation. After trying to navigate this complexity with grace and humility I was told things like “you did this to yourself.”
In my opinion, Bethany’s staff culture operates from fear and compliance rather than mutual respect. Staff are expected to “fall in line or be fired.” If a conflict arises between a congregant and a staff member, the default assumption is that the congregant is right—no matter the facts.
I personally received little to no pastoral support from leadership when serious issues surfaced. There’s also a strong presence of family control and nepotism within the upper levels of leadership. Decisions are often made through family ties rather than objective spiritual or professional evaluation. This dynamic makes it nearly impossible to raise honest feedback without being perceived as disloyal or rebellious.
After refusing to compromise my integrity, I was pressured to resign with ridicule and belittling. What’s even more a severance offer required me to sign a strict confidentiality and non-disparagement agreement with $10k financial penalties per offense if I ever spoke about my experience. I declined because it violated my conscience.
My family was also asked to leave our parsonage almost immediately; just a week after the birth of our baby boy. It was devastating time for our family to say the least. Within a span of four to six months prior, I also watched at least five other staff members leave or be terminated under similar pressure.
In addition, a large financial discrepancy of money reportedly went missing from the church budget, yet no investigation or transparency was offered to staff or the congregation. This lack of accountability further eroded trust and revealed how image and control often take priority over truth.
In my experience, Bethany’s leadership prioritizes image and control over honesty, accountability, and care for its staff & congregation. What I observed often felt like gas-lighting problems were reframed as personal failures rather than opportunities for honest discussion or repentance.
