Pros

Staff are fantastic, hard working and easy to get along with. Often the bar operated best when management and higher-ups were not as involved. Tips are decent.

Cons

From the top down; awful management. Man-management seems to be a concept that the leaders within the hotel, bar the most senior of the duty managers, fail to grasp, choosing instead to resort to picking favourites and talking to staff as though five years old. Frankly, the wrong people are in positions of power. They do not belong in a job which involves working with people, never mind leading people. This lack of ability leads to unmotivated staff, which is seen more as a chance to berate employees rather than step back and analyse why this happens so frequently. The tone used by management when speaking to staff, who are often doing their best or merely asking a question, is downright disrespectful. If you want a higher position, maybe ask yourself how you deal with stress, are you able to communicate effectively without coming across as hostile, are you able to treat your employees equally? Many times employees have felt that they frankly CANNOT GO TO MANAGEMENT if they have a query or an issue for fear of being verbally berated or made to feel useless. You are a manager first, not a sales driver or PR rep. Your first instinct upon being approached honestly about something should NOT be a knee-jerk, hostile response. Maybe, understand that your employees are fully-functioning human beings, much like you are, and are deserving of the same dignity, respect and tone that you no doubt use for your own higher-ups. You will never be praised, only told when something is wrong. Again, where is the motivation there? Many of the best, hardest working and effective employees left due to the issues I have laid out. It seems that the ideal candidate to work here is someone who lies down and accepts abuse without question. There is no room for collaboration. If you, god forbid, speak to a colleague for too long no matter how quiet the bar may be, you will be berated. Just be sure to ignore the long periods in which management will cluster together to chat aimlessly in the same way. No doubt this review will be dismissed, if even read at all, as the whining of someone who “doesn’t have what it takes” by management. I would point out that this same attitude and inability to listen to criticism is why the bar staff there currently has all been primarily hired in the last six months. Anyone with any semblance of self-respect and worth would find it hard to remain in a place which demeans and denies the basic principles of co-operation, respect and dignity.
