Pros

We are a dynamic-mission driven group of advisors that are committed to advancing access to finance, markets and social protection worldwide. We value our clients and their determination in the same efforts. People who support our work are motivated, skilled and engaged in this mission.

Cons

We do not hire staff but work on specific contracts that we outsource a pre-vetted consultants from our advisory board and close network. People who work with us are hired as consultants and are expected to be self-motivated, independent, creative and intellectually curious. Those who are not can feel frustrated or unfulfilled.

Pros

The consultants are bright people working on a wide range of interesting projects across the world. New consultants have the opportunity to dive into projects and take on real responsibility very quickly. EA's high standards and fast pace force new consultants to learn canny, creative ways to do applied research. More senior consultants have considerable latitude to undertake their own initiatives. EA has a distinct way of thinking about development practice and the clients of development projects; putting this client perspective approach into practice is a key part of EA's research and is good experience for anyone interested in development or public service. Finally, EA offers the opportunity for crash courses on its main focus areas: microfinance, micoinsurance, and client research.

Cons

EA is a very small firm, so the quantity and availability of work can vary widely. And the specificity of skills needed for projects means that some consultants can be overburdened while others are underworked. Additionally, there aren't the resources for formal professional development.
