Pros
The pay off of seeing great indie films released onto IndieFlix and the excitement from filmmakers to have a platform for their films is great. The health insurance is decent. Unprofessionalism. Anarchy. If you enjoy that sort of thing.
Cons
The direction of the company changes weekly to bi-weekly so much it's difficult to define your role at the company. You may get hired on as marketing or filmmaker relations but everyone just ends up being an assistant to the CEO who keeps throwing the most irrational tasks at you and demanding them to be done instantly while also balancing your other dozens of projects. The pay is incredibly low. The COO and the CEO seem to be getting paid very comfortably. In addition, the CEO plays favorites and will pay a low level employee more than a higher level and senior employee significantly more. Very demoralizing actions by the CEO. Because the pay is low, the level of employees who end up working at IndieFlix are very entry level so you can expect this type of work quality and professionalism while working at IndieFlix. The CEO has outdated and insignificant film experience to translate to this company as well as zero technology experience. She fails to listen to her team and instead acts as a dictator overruling any input by her team. She never consults or trusts her team instead consulting non-IndieFlix employees for advice on what her team should be doing. These "consultants" are also inexperienced. This may be why any employee with any skilled or lengthy experience may not stick around for very long. Second, it's common knowledge at the office that the CEO is dishonest to filmmakers, investors, and the general public about what we do, what we have, and what we offer. Filmmakers are leaving in mobs after 8 months because IndieFlix's model doesn't work. Beware, they illegally time shave your overtime. They generally give you PTO for working overtime but if you quit or get canned (happens to everyone eventually) they only pay out 20% of your PTO. Some employees left with over 70 hours of PTO from working so much OT. So much turnover there. The staff is 8-10 people and there have been roughly 20 employees to get canned or quit over the last 10-12 months. The COO is a terrible project manager. She, along with the CEO, is extremely inexperienced in technology which is what IndieFlix's primary function is as a company. She tries to understand but barely grasps what the company does therefore cannot manage projects efficiently. She is terrible at communicating and is known for looping important people in on projects at the last minute when the project is to launch the next day or the day of. Most importantly, the CEO is constantly coming up with new ideas and projects and not looping in the rest of the company on these projects. There are 10 people working here but 75% of them are completely disconnected from where the CEO is taking the company. There is absolutely no structure, workflow, or standardization at this company and if you try to bring that into the company, you will be met with resistance by the CEO who is adamantly against a corporate culture. Environment is very chaotic. Job security is minimal at best. Every single employee who has worked here has quit or was fired after 3 months to 2 years. If you make it to your 2 years mark, you've sacrificed a significant portion of your career/life to last this long with no pay off, minimal raise/compensation, and sanity. IndieFlix has been a "start-up" for 7+ years with no history of revenue. Typically a start-up doesn't last more than 2 years with no revenue. You'll be working every day wondering when the company will close it's doors and you'll be out of a job. The stress level is through the roof there. Everyone feels like their work never pays off because of the change of direction. You'll invest 2 weeks of your time working diligently on a project only to have it canceled and you'll end up wasting that time. The entire office is extremely catty. Everyone talks trash about each other behind their backs. Management encourages this. There doesn't seem to be anyone at the company who actually cares about making IndieFlix work. I think management is too comfortable with where they are at they have no hunger to grow the company. The company takes advantage of interns. They try to get away with getting free work done by interns yet not actually providing any real world experience or structure to an internship program. Lastly, there are other companies out there doing what IndieFlix does but they do it way better. IndieFlix is 2 years away from matching the competition.
