Pros

-The doctors I work with are AMAZING. I cannot stress this enough. Not only are they experts in their field, but they are also some of the kindest people I have ever come into contact with. They truly want you to understand why they do what they do, and are always willing to explain procedures/verbiage/etc. You can tell that they are grateful for their scribe. -A great way to gain meaningful experience in the medical field in order to move on to PA or MD programs. -It is a growing company, and with that come growing pains as well as successes. -Upper management listens to most concerns and answers emails within 24 hours.

Cons

-This is our third manager in the past 6 months. That alone brings unnecessary anxiety and thoughts of why are they leaving? Our newest manager seems ready and capable of making the changes needed to make this company successful. -Ten dollars an hour is not enough. Yes, it is great starting pay, but there is never any time to talk with the manager to ask for a raise. -No one is "full time." You will at least gain 20 hours a week, but that depends on your schedule and whether or not the doctors are taking off. If your doctor is off, so are you which is a double edged sword. You don't mind a day off, but you'd much rather be getting paid. There are opportunities to pick up shifts if you're willing to ask and drive to different locations. -I personally worked really hard to get medical insurance through the company because part time employees are not eligible. However, after reading the fine print, working an average of 32 hours a week, and staying in contact with multiple people in human resources for months, I was able to get medical insurance and paid time off. So just be aware that medical/dental/PTO are not necessarily available to you. -No room for growth.

Pros

Good resume builder, especially for college students who are interested in health or medicine.

Cons

Management is awful-- it's basically a giant clique and if upper management doesn't like you, you will never get promoted. Promotions should based on merit. I was one of the best scribes, I had the highest scores in training and I was one of the first two scribes ever trained on the hospital floor. My charts were among the best-- the physicians that I worked for told me so, and I was consistently placed with some of the toughest doctors. Yes when the next cohort came along, I was not extended the opportunity to train, even though I made it known I was interested. I have worked a lot of jobs and I have never experienced such backwards favoritism. The upper managers definitely plays favorites, they will over look some employees for being late or using their cell phones on the floor, while chastising others. The scribe promoted to an upper management position (this promotion happened after I left, thankfully) used to complain loudly about getting drunk and having to come into work while hungover, well within earshot of the patients and doctors... and now she's been promoted? There were definitely much better candidates and scribes available for that position, but I guess they aren't chummy with the "executives"-- and now a relative is an "executive" too-- go figure. Pay is awful and there are no benefits-- I never complained about this while employed there, because it wasn't a big deal at the time, but full time employees deserve health insurance and paid leave. There are much better scribe companies out there that are growing much faster than MSA-- hire one that actually cares about employee performance.
