Pros

You really can't get a better mission than Save's.

Cons

Going into Save I'd like you to understand a few real experiences. First, in December 2019 a mid-level HR staff member sent a note to all Save/US staff working overseas informing them that Save has dramatically miscalculated their tax withholdings. In my case, the mistake was equivalent to 5 months of take home pay. This is but the worst incident in a long string of payroll errors I encountered. My pay has fluctuated between receiving paychecks that are literally $0.00 to a few hundred to a couple of thousand. This relates to a few issues around salary and benefits to Save/US staff posted overseas. Other errors have included paying benefits for months beyond the date they are supposed to be paid and then forcing me to repay for months...and then making errors on the number of months needed to repay. I personally caught many of these not inconsequential errors. Save senior management has evidently taken the advise of their lawyers and decided to not effectively help their employees put in serious binds by Save's accounting errors. This underscores the character of the senior leadership team that hides behind processes and fails to engage real employee complaints. Do not work with Save unless you have savings and can weather the serious financial mistakes the organization can make with your pay, benefits, and taxes. If you want an idea of how Save responds to complaints, read the responses on this website. There's a lot of talk of wanting to hear issues and make change...but precious little real action. Can you go five months without a paycheck? If not...look for a different employer.

Pros

Save the Children offers deeply meaningful, mission-driven work alongside colleagues who are genuinely committed to impact. I’ve had a very positive experience with my manager, and there are many strong, thoughtful professionals across the organization. More recently, new staff coming in have been high-caliber and bring fresh energy and expertise. There are signs the organization is moving in a more positive direction, and benefits and flexibility are solid for the nonprofit sector.

Cons

There was a major reduction in staffing over the course of a year, carried out in several large phases due to a decline in public funding. This was followed by a number of senior staff departures, which, in combination, affected morale and increased uncertainty across teams. From a staff perspective, the pace and communication around these changes sometimes felt abrupt and not always clearly explained. While change is never easy, the experience was particularly challenging for those navigating ongoing transitions and shifting priorities. At times, there can also be a perception of inconsistency in how personnel decisions are made, which can further impact trust.
