Pros

Great product and great VP of Sales

Cons

Where do I even begin?! I don’t want to waste my time rewriting what has already been written. Everything you have read (besides the hysterical post by the current delusional CFO) is true. Toxic work environment, narcissistic and delusional leadership, overworked, underpaid; it’s all true. If for some reason you are sick and still contemplating working for this company I will add a few of my own take aways. There are truly no words to adequately describe Katie Fang. I have never met anyone like her. She is the golden standard for what not to do as a CEO. She belittles everyone around her, she sends biweekly emails telling us how disappointed she is in our performance, she continues to humiliate and disrespect those around her, and the list goes on and on. The mental and emotional abuse is honestly worthy of its own episode of 60 minutes. To put it nicely, I left without another job lined up because unemployment was a better option. I am now battling the CFO to be paid for the work I did. Know that you try to take your PTO you will be shamed for not caring about the success of the company, but also if you leave they will not pay you for your accrued time. They also manipulate the comp plan to benefit them and will do everything in there power to not pay you if you leave. This company is all about saving a penny and it’s usually at the expense of its employees. They love to brag about not having to do layoffs and being positive on cash, but the reality is no one stays long enough to get laid off and they underpay their employees so significantly that I would be concerned if the cash wasn’t flowing. I could go on and on about the hell that is SchooLinks but I will leave you with this motivational excerpt from the CEO herself in one of her biweekly company newsletters: “ The most common thing I hear from new employees after onboarding and current employees after an enablement session is "That's a firehose of information!" Foreign concepts might feel intimidating and might require repetition for it to stick. I am not going to lie, it does feel like being able to succeed in a fast-paced environment and learning style accommodation are oftentimes at odds. That fast-learner who can absorb and retain information after being taught just once via whatever medium can have more time to absorb new concepts, while a static learner is still on the same topic trying to wait for the content being put into their preferred medium. (That's why it's so important for young students to learn how to learn!) I challenge you to think through why information is not sticking for you without pointing to your learning style, and perhaps is there a specific genre of information that you are not able to absorb.” If this doesn’t sum up the person Katie is, I don’t know what would. The only other person I will specifically address in this review is the frat boy himself, Mason Rathe. Straight out of the 2000’s polo catalogue, Mason is quite the treat. He is cocky, arrogant, starts meetings with “yo” and yet carries the title of CFO. He is a self proclaimed competitor in CFO of the year (pretty sure he nominated himself), and is smarter than everyone. He won’t pay you fairly, he will make sure you aren’t paid your expense reimbursement in a timely manner, and will also withhold every penny possible because he likes to be “scrappy”. If you plan to work for Schoolinks and are required to travel, I hope McDonalds is your meal of choice because that’s about all the company will pay for. They would honestly prefer you sleep in your car and beg for a sandwich on the corner. But I digress. If you’re still reading these reviews and considering SchooLinks as your place of employment, then I can’t help you. 1 year at SchooLinks is like dog years; it will feel like 10. I wish I could warn everyone to work ANYWHERE but here and hope this will stop at least one of you from making the worst decision possible for your career, sanity, mental health, etc.

Pros

The people are decent enough, which is the only reason I didn't leave sooner. That's about it.

Cons

There's literally no path forward here for anyone who actually cares about getting better. You're not learning new tech, you're not getting exposed to different projects or challenges, you just maintain the same code and do the same tasks month after month which honestly gets old past. I asked multiple times about growth opportunities and got vague answers that never materialized into anything concrete. Meanwhile I'm watching peers at other companies level up their skills and move into more interesting work while I'm still in the exact same place, which is depressing. The company seems to think just paying you is enough, like there's no responsibility to actually develop your team's capabilities or give them a reason to stay. After two years of stagnation it became clear this place doesn't invest in people.
