What is the company culture at DeepL?

      DeepL reviews

Not bad but not good either

      Pros

Some regions are performing better than others - of course DeepL has a great product so there is a lot of potential to sell it but at the same time they are now going into the phase of overhiring which of course has a huge impact on the sales team. Too many people even in the good performing region is an overkill and totally unnecessary from a sales person perspective. I am sure management has another view on it. Good people are working there and the culture is still nice but slowly unfortunately moving into the corporate direction

      Cons

Lack of visibility on the decisions that are being made and also lack of honesty - management is saying one thing and doing another confusing and somehow playing people in the end. Still very chaotic in terms of management, territories and clarity. DeepL is slowly becoming a victim of its own growth

      DeepL has lost direction

      Pros

Smart, capable colleagues who care about the company and its goals. The work environment is collaborative and supportive, with a strong sense of community. Work-life balance is good, and working for a European company is a real plus.

      Cons

DeepL feels completely lost right now. AI is changing the market fast, and leadership seems to have no real strategy beyond pretending everything is under control. Quotas are not being hit, morale is poor, and communication is either nonexistent or full of empty talking points about competing with other companies and how things are supposedly going well. It comes across as denial, not leadership. Management feels deeply disconnected from the reality of the business and from the people doing the actual work. There is a lot of image management which is starting to look cliquey and very little honesty about how serious the problems are. On top of that, the ex-CRO bringing in his own friends instead of hiring genuinely qualified people with relevant experience seems to have damaged the quality of leadership and decision-making. The result is a company that feels increasingly driven by favoritism, weak judgment, and self-preservation rather than competence.

      Pros

      - good product, good clients, decent compensation package and generally people are nice.

      Cons

      - they hire a lot based on nepotism and there is a toxic culture in some teams in comparison to others and some people are out there trying to take credit for others work.

      Pros

Working with an AI product that makes a genuine impact on people's lives Great and smart colleagues to work with, who are really passionate about what we do. Solid benefits and flexible working despite the new hybrid policy, flexibility is supported. Challenging work, chance to work on interesting projects

      Cons

Going through a lot of change very quickly which is having an impact on the culture. We are trying to move faster, take more risks, be more innovative but we are actually moving slower than ever and the competition is increasing faster than we realise. We are becoming very corporate, and seem to losing our "soul" as it were. DeepL has a long way to go where diversity is concerned.

      Cons

      - The culture is becoming horrendous, with management spending their time peddling company BS on LinkedIn instead of addressing the real issues. - A number of people who were referred in from the old company and started less than a year ago are already polishing up their LinkedIn profiles looking to leave for new opportunities.

      Culture of delusion

      Pros

One of the best translators on the market, with excellent quality for key languages. However, the situation is chaotic to the point of being almost amusing to watch. The fake reviews from the Talent Acquisition team are also entertaining in their own way. Interestingly, this is the only company where employees are actually hoping for layoffs, which is quite unusual. Favoritism is prevalent; if you’re in the good books of certain C-levels or senior leaders, you can get away with almost anything—even inappropriate comments or disruptive behavior. If you’re a current or former employee and believe my review is fair and accurate, please give it a like.

      Cons

Numerous operational challenges have persisted for years without being resolved, despite management’s awareness. Commissions are often not paid accurately, and the equity offered frequently falls short of what was promised during interviews. There is a significant pay gap between Account Executives hired this year and those from previous years. The company culture is poor, with subtle instances of racism and bullying observed in certain teams. Departments operate in silos, with inconsistent pacing and priorities and a lack of revenue-driven processes. While there are multiple internal surveys and discussions about making improvements, nothing meaningful changes. There is no accountability, and there’s a clear lack of processes, ideal customer profiles, and essential support for the sales team. Open, honest feedback tends to be met with retaliation. Overall, leadership seems uninterested, focused only on a quick exit strategy without acknowledging the time and commitment that real improvement requires.

Toxic culture and unclear strategy hinder collaboration

      Software engineer
      Former employee

      Business Outlook

      Pros

A lot of talanted staff, generally really good standard of engineering, heavy adoption into AI tooling to help with day to day tasks.

      Cons

In my experience, certain teams operated in an extremely siloed manner. It felt as though some individuals actively guarded their knowledge rather than sharing it, which in my view ran completely counter to what it means to be a team player. Over time, I felt this contributed to a toxic working environment that seemed to reward isolation over collaboration. With the majority of roles being fully remote, I think this made the problem considerably worse rather than better. From where I was sitting, the business strategy also felt increasingly unclear. The company had historically held a strong lead in language translation, but in my opinion it struggled to respond effectively as competitors closed the gap. Rather than doubling down on that strength, the decision was made to pivot towards Agentic AI, a space already dominated by much larger players with far greater resources. What struck me most about that pivot was how it was positioned internally. We were told that the agentic product was going to be the vehicle for significant company growth, with the clear implication that language translation could no longer deliver that. Yet, after roughly a year, the agentic product was cancelled. My sense was that confidence in producing a truly compelling product had simply evaporated. What I found difficult to reconcile was that the company had, in my view, publicly walked away from its belief in language translation, then abandoned the thing meant to replace it, all without any clear plan for what came next. It left me feeling that the business could comfortably coast along but had no realistic path to the kind of rapid growth it had once achieved. Management was, in my experience, quite mixed. Some managers were genuinely excellent, but others I felt were not effectively addressing poor behaviours or performance issues within their teams. A particular concern for me was what I perceived as strong confirmation bias in some newer managers. It seemed to me as though they had formed their views and conclusions from conversations with previous managers, rather than taking the time to observe, gather their own evidence and reach their own judgements. On the subject of remote working, I personally felt that having so many people on remote contracts made it even more important to actively break down silos and foster a genuine team culture. In my view, the opposite seemed to happen. Many people appeared to have little interest in collaboration, seemingly preferring to work in near-total isolation with minimal contact. On the occasions when some of these individuals did join a call, I often found it a frustrating experience. There were times when I'd be on a call for half an hour or more, walking someone through a problem, only to get the impression they were multitasking throughout. You'd assume they were following along until you asked a direct question and were met with something along the lines of "sorry, could you repeat that?" It was a pattern I encountered more than once. What I found particularly disheartening was the contrast between how some colleagues presented themselves in larger group settings versus how they actually behaved day to day. In meetings, they would raise thoughtful points and speak persuasively about improving team culture and ways of working. In practice, from my perspective, their behaviour was often the complete opposite. Classic talk the talk, don't walk the walk. Finally, in light of the recent round of redundancies, I'm personally not surprised by where things have landed. My honest view is that the executive team needs to take a long, hard look at the business strategy. From where I stood, there was a lot of uncertainty at the top, and without a clear and credible direction, it's difficult to see how the company moves forward with any real confidence.

Ambitious company for ambitious people, and trending in the right direction

      Business Outlook

      Pros

You'll work with some of the smartest people you've ever met, both internally and externally. Polyglots, ML and AI engineers, language researchers and translation professionals - all intelligent and driven people who are kind to boot. Also, in my experience, there's a lot of trust as long as you get sh*t done and hold yourself to a standard. The company is ambitious so it's not a "minimum effort" kinda ride. More recently, there's been a whole host of very experienced people both within, and being brought in to, the business - and their voices are being amplified, which is a large part of the direction trend. Pay is decent and progression can be had, although can be dependent on your areas' structure and who you sit under; make sure it aligns with your personal goals and the progression is there if you want it.

      Cons

There has been a period of change, and the ripples are still settling; but the intentions are good and getting better all the time. It's a company in it's late teenage years - it's learned some lessons and gone through the growing pains, just don't expect everything to be 100% ironed out. An example is that documentation can still be lacking due to the rapid growth, but an open culture makes up for it. Be prepared to build a boat as you sail on it, and just speak to others.
