"Flexible Freelance Work with Fair Pay but Strict Guidelines"

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Outlier promotes creative thinking and encourages employees to experiment with new ideas. Colleagues are approachable, and there’s a strong sense of collaboration across teams. The company offers flexible work hours, supporting a healthy work-life balance with remote or hybrid options in many roles. There are plenty of learning opportunities, with investments in training programs, courses, and workshops. Leadership is transparent and regularly communicates company performance and goals.

      Cons

The fast-paced environment might be overwhelming for some, especially those who prefer more structured processes. As a growing company, some departments may face resource or tool limitations. In certain teams, responsibilities can be unclear, particularly during periods of transition or rapid growth. While the perks and benefits are decent, they may not match those of larger, more established tech companies. Additionally, clearer roadmaps for promotions and internal mobility would be beneficial.

      Pros

Originally this company was offering 40 USD + bonuses for expert reviewers. And for roughly 1 quarter of the year, it lived up to this.

      Cons

When problems arise, there is no recourse. The platform is poorly managed, and the company has cut back on many of the benefits of the work. They no longer pay for training. Rates are reduced without reason or warning. Support is non-existent. Some of the reviewers in the platform don't know what they are doing. It's generally a mess.

      its decent but inconsistant

      Pros

completely remote, pays well in stem related fields(if capable enough).

      Cons

Inconsistent work and wages, the website works as a hub for projects to appear which pay differently based on the projects discretion, and even if you work sometimes you don't have enough time and lose all the money you would have gained and must retry. There are also no benefits and as its self employment the taxes are rough.

      Pretty much a scam

      Pros

flexibility, it's better than nothing (barely)

      Cons

Conservatively, half of the work I have done for outlier has been unpaid. For the first few months I was working there, I got tasks and made okay money. In the last few months, however, I haven't gotten more than one or two paid tasks before being informed that a project is over or ending or migrating into a new project. All of the trainings are unpaid. I will spend a whole day onboarding and training for a new project, only to be told as soon as I am done that the project has no tasks available and that I should start a new project. It's infuriating, and feels like I am being taken advantage of. There is no one to reach out to about this--the project managers can't do anything and outlier support services takes weeks to respond to issues and doesn't provide any help when they eventually do respond. There are no benefits, and the onboarding isn't worth your time.

      Pros

Reasonable pay if you have the right skills and can get assignments

      Cons

No benefits, inconsistent assignments, will often waste your time with unpaid work and remove you from projects with no feedback

      Abusive practices, sketchy payment

      Pros

Contractors work from home. Make your own hours (although there is pressure to conform to their wishes.)

      Cons

Outlier wants it all. They want you to put in full-time, or close to full-time hours although they state: "work when you want." They put constraints on many projects - if you don't work a minimum of hours per week, they boot you. The "managers" are a mix of good and bad. All are overworked and very stressed. It's impossible to find someone to help resolve issues and answer questions. When they don't have projects for you, tough luck but when you need a week or two away from the work, they cut you out. Payment is typically made on Tuesdays (midnight Wed a.m. This is not something to be counted on although they do pay (eventually). They send out email from time to time requesting contractors write positive Glassdoor reviews and specifically ask people to include in the review that there are no payment glitches and problems. Definitely a pass. This company recently changed names (from Remotasks) to avoid all the negative buzz about their business practices. Something to be aware of: when you do work from home contract work, the company benefits by abusing what are normal business practices. For instance, when you work for a brick and mortar company, you get paid breaks and company camaraderie during the day that is paid and helps alleviate stress and refocus the worker. When you work this kind of job, you aren't an employee. You are only paid for the actual minutes you are on a task. If you run to bathroom for two minutes, you must pause the task - you don't get paid for the bathroom run. You begin to feel desperate. You need the work but all of the balls are in their court. They don't even know your name. This is the way I believe business will morph in the future. The employee doesn't receive any benefits and the company makes a fortune off their backs. (p.s. there was no option for remote work. I did not work in a corporate office.)

      Pros

It's pretty good for contract work: decent wage (for the Specialist level), set your own hours, and remote work option.

      Cons

Lack of benefits, and sometimes you'll have "empty queue" which means no available projects.
