What is a typical working day like at The Y (YMCA)?

I work at the desk of the Knightdale Station branch. Opportunies for hours are excellent. There are opportunies to help the lifeguards with opening/closing duties, so you aren't just sitting all shift. You can also read a book during the downtime where no one's coming to the desk.

As a desk attendent, there are plenty of little rules that you must enforce that you aren't nessecarly explicitly told, such as not being allowed to accept people with the 7-day free pass.

- You are able to work with kids from ages 5-14 and help them navigate the world. - The managers are caring and supportive. - Good salary, especially for a summer job.

- The schedule is more of a suggestion, you will have basically no idea what you're doing all day. - Zero lunch break. When you eat lunch you are still on the job, which I guess is expected, but be warned, you will be working for 8 hours straight. Possibly more if they ask you to clean up the trailers at the end of your shift. - This could have changed but when I worked there, most of the co-counselors were not interested in doing their job and some would even talk to each other in the hallways rather than watching the kids. - You have to swim every single day even if you are on your period. - This may not be everyone's experience, but I personally was not able to build a "work family" as it felt as if all the counselors already knew each other. If you have social anxiety this isn't the job for you.
