A year or so ago I was looking to leave the company I'm still with today and ended up applying for Commercial Roofing Project Manager at 3MG Roofing. I'd done my research and they were in the top of the companies I wanted to work for, I interviewed with Alec and Joel (at the time VP & President of Commercial, respectively). It was great – we ended up talking for over an hour. They were very knowledgeable and we really hit it off. By the end of the interview, Joel told me he and Alec would come up with an offer and have Dave (the recruiter at that time) reach out in a few days.
Let me repeat.
Alec and Joel = Awesome
3MG = Awesome from all I could tell.
I can’t speak more highly of 99.9% of my experience and impression of 3MG.
…
Then things got tricky with Dave. Not only did I never hear about an offer from him, I never heard anything from Dave ever again. He never returned my calls or responded to my texts after that interview. Dave was my only contact at the company, and his behavior was a stark contrast to what I experienced with Alec and Joel. Until then, Dave had been virtually unresponsive to any of my follow-ups. When he finally did reply, he told me the PM position wasn’t available and that I’d be “more suited” for commercial field technician—even though my resume was targeted to PM roles and didn’t even mention my earlier technical experience. And to top it off, the Commercial PM position remained up for several weeks after he said it was filled. Even when I followed up, I’d often get a “who’s this?” or a “send dl again” followed by nothing. His sudden change in behavior left me puzzled, especially because when I first met him in the office, he seemed nice enough.
I only managed to get an interview after I came back to the office and followed up again. By chance, Joel met me at the door—not when I was only dealing with Dave. Joel said he’d have Dave schedule an interview, and I did get a prompt callback that got things moving. But even during that interview, Dave mentioned to both Joel and Alec that I was applying to another position. After the interview, I was told to expect an offer from him—then nothing. I even believe he left my text messages on read, complete ghost. Nothing about Alec, Joel, or 3MG Roofing seemed like this was something they'd be okay with. I tried following up in person a third time, but I couldn’t get past Dave or the receptionist. I'm not sure if he just didn’t like me or what, but it bothered me a lot. The position was clearly a big need for them at the time, and I was more than qualified and excited to do it (I was even gonna take a pay cut for the move).
In the end, my current job ended up offering me a raise to stay, and I still ended up doing ok. But the whole experience really stuck with me. I kept imagining if I wanted to hire for a crucial position and one of my people was blocking qualified candidates without me even knowing. Every now and then I still think about it and say to myself, “Even if he’s not there anymore, they gotta know this happened.” I hate the idea of leaving a review about them that’s anything less than EXCELLENT. Let me reiterate: I have nothing but amazing things to say about my experience with Alec, Joel, and 3MG as a whole. The only bad thing about my experience was Dave the recruiter. I'm only writing this because I feel like they should know what happened—and to finally scratch the itch of saying something about it.
