      Software Engineer Interview

      May 25, 2018
      Anonymous employee
      New York, NY
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Aaptiv (New York, NY) in May 2018

      Interview

Contacted through Hired. Initial call was with their people/HR department. It was a quick half an hour call. Next step was a phone interview with a software engineer on their web team. He asked two language specific technical questions and then we moved to JSFiddle for me to do some coding problems. I was then invited to do an in-person interview at their office, which consisted of 3 interviews. The first interview was a coding question, the second interview was a design question, and the last interview was with their engineering director to test culture fit. I was given an offer a couple days after. Overall, it was a great experience and it was a very efficient process. Their people department is on top of things and replies very quickly.

      Application

      Interview

I have been in the industry for several years, and this was hands-down the worst interview experience of my career so far. I'm intentionally keeping this general enough to not be easily personally identifiable, but I wanted to give a heads-up for any future candidates. Many communications were sloppy/unprofessional, and demanded immediate replies. To their credit, I usually got fast updates and replies, but I'm not sure what late night and weekend emails say about work-life balance. Most interviewers were nice enough, but only one seemed genuinely excited/enthusiastic about the company. In one interview that I believe was meant to evaluate my thought process, the interviewer would interrupt as soon as I said something, and basically give me the solution (I was not struggling, just talking aloud as they asked). This happened for the entire interview and felt simultaneously patronizing and like hand-holding, even if it was meant to be helpful. From conversations and seeing the office in-person, it seemed there were startup growing pains, including organization and work-life balance. The growth seems promising at a business level, but I didn't get the sense it would be great to work there right now.

      Software Engineer Interview

      Feb 14, 2018
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      New York, NY
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Aaptiv (New York, NY) in Feb 2018

      Interview

Phone screening with HR then online code quiz. One had to do with designing models and the other was more of a puzzle. Passed and then went to an onsite and met with 3 different people; processed involved pair programming, white boarding, and questions about my background. Did not get an offer. Would have liked more personal feedback than "was not technical enough" as I put a lot of time into the code quiz along with the final interview.
