      Junior Site Reliability Engineer Interview

      Feb 15, 2014

      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Altiscale (Palo Alto, CA) in Feb 2014

      Interview

I got in contact with Altiscale through a recruiter. Initially, the process was pleasant. The phone interview was mostly about basic linux and networking questions: 1. Are you familar with rpm based linux? 2. Do you know any scripting languages? 3. What is the kill signal to kill a command in linux? 4. Explain TCP/IP to someone that knows nothing about it. 5. Which flag in the TCP header is set when the initial package is sent? 6. Explain "ls" and some of its options like "ls -t", "ls -l", etc. 7. How does linux keep track of the information listed in "ls -l"? The recruiter calls me back two days later and said they wanted to schedule an on-site interview, and he'll contact me when he finds out an available time from Altiscale. The process got really unprofessional and confusing afterwards. I got a call one week later, from a different recruiter (weird?), to schedule an on-site interview. This recruiter booked me for an interview in 3 days, and I confirmed it. The next day, the initial recruiter called me and said he's still awaiting for a response from Altiscale, and he'll keep me updated. I told him I was already schedule an interview from a different person. He seemed a bit confused also, but sorted things out later. Things got worse. During the period of the 3 days, the second recruiter emailed me back saying 1 of the interviewers can't make it and they'll update me with a new schedule. So I waited. Now, it's the day before the "supposedly scheduled interview date", I received an email from the same recruiter saying the interview WILL be tomorrow, and I will be meeting with 3 of the engineers there. One day notice. Great. Things can't get worse? WRONG! I drove all the way to their headquarters for the on-site interview and only 1 of the interviewers was there. He said the other 2 had to meet with a customer, and he might have to reschedule the interview. I'm thinking "Great. A phone call to let me know would've been nice" since the guys already left before I got there. I asked a little about what happened and from the information, I concluded they left at least half a hour before I got there, so a phone call was definitely possible. Instead, they just let me drove all the way to their HQ. So I did an 1 on 1 interview with this guy. Mostly talked about my previous work experience and some of the products I worked with. The guy didn't even have questions prepared for the interview. A lot of the time, he was on his phone trying to find out when the 2 other guys will come back. The interview ended about 40 mins later, and he said he'll have to reschedule the interview for another day so I can meet with the 2 other members. Later that day, I received a call from the original recruiter saying they do not plan to move forward with my candidacy.

Thank you for the feedback, since this interview I have been hired as Head of Staffing and we have hired a Recruiting Coordinator. We take all feedback very seriously and we apologize for the confusion and disconnect. We have taken steps to improve process, candidate interaction and candidate experience to keep situations like you described isolated to a one off. Thank you again for the honest insight.
