      Senior PHP Developer Interview

      Mar 11, 2014
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Pittsburgh, PA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at AssetNation (Pittsburgh, PA) in Mar 2014

      Interview

Applied online through a recruiter. Initial phone screening from the recruiter was fairly quick (few days). Took 2+ weeks to setup a technical phone interview with the Senior VP of technology. They seemed pleased and asked for an in person interview the following day. The interview was about an hour long, met with the Senior VP of Technology and two other team members (front-end and back-end developers). Basic test in PHP and a fizzbuzz coding challenge (anyone with about 6 months of experience under their belt could pass this). Followed up the next day and asked me to come back for a second round of interviews the following week. Was initially scheduled to meet with 6 different people from various departments, but one of them canceled stating they had no questions for me. The questions were fairly easy with very little digging into my technical knowledge. It's bad when one of the interviewers has less understanding of the job than you do. One of the interviewers even stated they were only there for 6 weeks and had no real questions they could ask me. Everyone on the team seemed very inexperienced. From there you could tell it was all down-hill as each interviewer had less and less to ask me. This company just got acquired be a bigger company and were basically working with a very small tech department that (from the looks of it) were just going to be transitioning their infrastructure and handing it off to a bunch of outsourced developers. The final round consisted of puzzles that had nothing to do with the job description. Stuff you'd find on Google, pretty much. At that point I was already convinced they had wasted my time and that I was not going to take the job even if they offered it. The recruiter got back to me the next day and stated they passed on the offer. Their feedback was that I was too vague and didn't demonstrate any real world experience. What's bizarre about this feedback is that I was extremely explicit in all of the technical questions each interviewer asked, but unfortunately the majority of their questions were not technical at all and had almost no depth to them. Not once did any interviewer ask me to elaborate on anything I said or followup my answer with another question, apart from the Senior VP of Technology. I had more experience under my belt than their entire development team combined. Overall, an incredible waste of time. From the looks of it this company is going to be out-sourcing its entire development efforts off-shore (apparently they already out source the majority of their front-end development to India according to management).
