      Chemist Interview

      Jun 13, 2019
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at Avomeen

      Interview

I arrived and was notified my first interviewer was out of office. No effort was made to reschedule the interview day before I arrived. The second interviewer (first I spoke with) questioned the veracity of the subject matter of a publication I was involved in both as a lab analyst and author. He claimed the work wasn't possible and got frustrated with me and walked out of the interview. This stemmed from his lack of understanding of the difference between literature boiling points and enthalpy of vaporization when introducing samples to a GC. I found this whole portion of the interview rather insulting as he fixated on this (nearly to the point of claiming we must have made up the contents of the publication) and we didn't talk about much else. The final interviewer, although much kinder, revealed a number of company culture red flags when it comes to CROs. The client always wants things ASAP and it seems employees are just expected to put in the hours and shifts needed to get it done. The project manager is more like a yes-man to the client rather than a buffer to protect the chemist from unreasonable requests. If you get a difficult client, expect long hours or weekend shifts. I didn't receive and offer because I pulled my candidacy.
