SUMMARY: Extremely disappointing and unprofessional experience. Was verbally offered a role, then had the offer rescinded due to blanket prejudice against people with freelance backgrounds.
-
I went through a detailed interview process, including written responses and two interviews with senior leadership. I was told I was a top candidate, and the VP extended a verbal offer with a start date five days later. She even mentioned pushing for a higher salary to reflect how committed BARBRI was to bringing me on long-term.
The next day, I was told higher-level leadership had “paused” my hiring due to concerns about past employees with freelance backgrounds. Two days after my planned start date, the offer was rescinded — not because of anything I did, but because of a blanket prejudice against people with freelance backgrounds.
It was confusing, disappointing, and frankly unprofessional. If you have a freelance-heavy background, don’t be misled by positive signals — and don’t trust verbal offers. In the end, I may have dodged a bullet. If this is how they treat someone they intended to hire, it raises serious questions about how they treat their employees.
