I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Brex
Interview
Each person I met on the interview panel, from tech screen to full day session, was friendly, warm and professional. The interviews are set up for your success and very relevant to what you will do on the job. This for me means that the company is very thoughtful about their hiring process. Working with the recruiting team was a pleasant experience as well.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Coding session that assesses clean coding more than tricky stuff. Debugging session where you fix bugs in an existing piece of code. System design. Experience and values session.
Thank you for writing such a detailed review! We’re so glad that you felt that the interview process was thoughtful and a valid representation of your new day to day. Happy to have you on the team!

I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at Brex (New York, NY) in Feb 2021
Interview
The interview process at Brex is fairly standard - a coding screen followed by an onsite with two coding assessments, design, debugging, and a values interview. Of these, the debugging session was particularly refreshing as I was given a small codebase with some latent errors that I had to find and fix.
I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Brex in Aug 2020
Interview
Brex gave me a positive interview experience that focused upon the practical demands of the role — i.e., stuff I would actually do on the job.
The 3-hour frontend assignment was fun. It was challenging without being tricky, and I could make my own framework choices and work in my own editor, so it felt comfortable. The scope of the assignment wasn't unrealistic, but I doubt many people finish it in its entirety, so don’t let that dress you out. I'd take this kind of interview any day over Leetcode-style problems.
My only gripes were that I could've really used a 5-minute break during the 3-hour coding period. (I could've taken one, but it would've come out of my coding time.) Perhaps they should require a 5 minute break at the midpoint?
Also, for the more senior engineering roles, I think it would be wise for them to probe a bit more for leadership skills. The values interview focused entirely on whether I'd be a good teammate versus an effective leader.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
I selected the frontend-focused loop, which had two parts:
— 1 hour values interview with a variety of behavioral questions.
— 3 hour combined technical interview, where I was given a feature spec and visual mockup, and had to implement as much as possible. Three interviewers cycled through to 'keep me company' (i.e., observe me and answer questions), and at the end, all three spent 30 minutes receiving a code tour and asking questions.
What a wonderful review! Thank you so much for taking the time to write to us about your experience. We’re always working to improve our process and appreciate your feedback.
