The process took me two months in total.
After submitting my application by the posted deadline, I was contacted to come in and take a written exam. 60ish questions, Scantron-style. I took the exam with about 15 other approved applicants.
Those who scored in the upper tier were invited back a week later for an informal verbal exam - two employees from the department asking about 10 questions. My advice is to get there at least 15 minutes ahead of time so that you can study up on the questions that they provide.
From here, I was informed that I was one of the top scorers from both exams (not the highest) and would be placed on a waiting list for 6 months or until the next available position were to open up.
I was invited back about a month later for another interview, this time with two of the department leads. This interview was a bit more formal but in the same style as the last one where the questions were asked from a list. Again, get there at least 15 minutes prior so that you can review and prepare answers for each question.
After this, it was about a week before I heard back from HR. They contacted my references and, once everything checked out, I was offered the position.
Overall, the interview process was fairly simple and straightforward. I didn’t need to do a lot of prep. Note that because CUSD is unionized, the salary for the position is predetermined so there is not an opportunity to negotiate. The salary is posted with the job description so there were no surprises.
