I was interviewed by 2 people: one of them, a fellow creative, whom I instantly liked, and the other was someone in HR. The 45-minute Zoom call generally went well enough, although the time would have been vastly better utilized if it had been a one-on-one between the hiring manager and myself. After all, she and I are the ones who would have been working together directly day after day. Plus, she was very personable; direct in her questions, yet still conversational. Instead, the HR person tended to dominate. She takes her responsibility as cultural gatekeeper very, very seriously. Perhaps too much so. And while she articulated her intentions with seeming frankness, I later realized I had seen only the tip of the iceberg. Because her lovely, heart-warming, encouraging, make-yourself-comfortable talk about faith, family, inclusiveness turns out to mask an extremely controlling hidden agenda.
