Soon after submitting my resume I was invited for a 30 meet-n-greet with the hiring manager. I asked about next steps and was told that he was completing these meet-n-greet sessions with folks and would invite a few back for panel interviews and then decision would be made from there. I was invited to panel interview then heard nothing for almost 4 weeks. I was asked to come in the next day for a technical assessment. This was the first time I had heard of this step and it appeared to be something they just decided to do. After the assessment, hiring manager said he would call me the next day to talk about the position and next steps. I got the run around for almost a week before he finally said that I wasn't getting an offer and they were keeping the position open because I didn't meet what they needed immediately in terms of being able to do my subordinates jobs even though none of that was shared as a required need in any conversation prior. I thought I would have time to learn more of the technical aspects within the first few months. I understood the work but didn't have to actually do it in the job I had which was basically the same position with a different company.
