      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      Aug 20, 2024
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Brisbane
      Declined offer
      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Compono (Brisbane)

      Interview

      1. Phone screen: Ask about yourself, skills, experience, why you're applying, tell you about the role and company 2. Take-home code challenge: straightforward React Todo app requiring simple feature extension. Time limit of 45mins. 3. Technical interview: Principal and Tech Lead ask high-level technical questions. Quite good and enjoyable questions. Ends with a small code review. 4. Online Psychometric Testing: straightforward IQ/personality tests 5. Product Manager Interview: PM seemed to do most of the talking explaining the role and their product. Was told it would be behavioural by the recruiter beforehand, but the interview didn't seem to have much structure and was caught off-guard by bute-sized technical system design questions.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Compono in Feb 2024

      Interview

There was a technical challenge, followed by a technical interview, a psychometric challenge, and then a HR interview. The technical challenge was admittedly very basic and much simpler than I expected for this position, but it opened up the possibility for a decent amount of discussion during the technical interview. Overall the technical team seemed very competent. The psychometric challenge read like a screener for avoiding any candidates with the slightest possibility of mental health issues, as it largely focused its questions on depression. Unlike the technical, the HR interview was another matter however, where the two interviewers seemed very focused on highlighting negativity in my role via their questioning rather than discussing positive desires and outcomes. It seems like the people running their project management like to assert a position of dominance over their team, and a huge deal of bias was felt during this call. This became especially clear after hearing about their micromanagement processes. After this experience I'm glad I did not receive an offer, as I would have rejected it anyway given the experience of the HR interview.

      Question 1

For whatever reason, during the HR meeting, they really wanted to press on negative aspects of my employment. They constantly asked questions about things I don't like in an employment environment.
