      Operations Research Scientist Interview

      Dec 17, 2021
      Anonymous employee
      Seattle, WA
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Convoy (Seattle, WA) in Nov 2021

      Interview

The interview process is mostly in line with other tech companies. Usually two technical screens (I only had one, because I did an extended in-person screen at a conference), followed by a 4-hour on-site (in this case virtually due to the pandemic). The on-site included four components: - Case study in Operations Research - Coding - Behavioral questions by bar raiser - Behavioral and resume related questions by hiring manager I have to commend the recruiter that guided me through the entire process. He was incredibly helpful and always responded to emails and questions quickly. He was also very helpful in salary negotiation.

      Question 1

      - Formulate an Operations Research Problem as a Mathematical Model and explain how you would solve it - Implement a heuristic to solve an Operations Research Problem in your preferred programming language - What are common pitfalls of some heuristic routing algorithms - Tell me about a time where you... (type behavioral questions)

      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Convoy in Jul 2021

      Interview

After talking with HR, had my technical round with a lady from OR team. She clearly didn't know what she wanted and was not prepared at all. She started with "let's say we want to assign trucks to different loads. Now ask me your questions about the assumptions". I wanted to make her impressed, so I asked like 1000 questions (e.g. is there a deadline for delivering each load?, is there pickup and dropoff?, and 10s more) and she was saying Yes to every single assumption I was explaining. In many cases, those assumptions were kind of conflicting, and still, she was saying Yes! Then she told me now formulate this problem. Excuse me? This model would have had at least 20 sets of constraints and it was way more complex than TSPPDTW. How do you expect me to model in like 10 minutes? I modeled a very easier version of the problem, at the end. And after the modeling, she asked me some other vague questions about modeling and some other ML questions. Got the rejection email the next day. What a waste of time!
