      Software Developer Interview

      Aug 9, 2024
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at DPS Telecom in Jul 2024

      Interview

As other reviews have stated, the interview process is rather long, although this isn't too surprising considering they don't actually require any prior experience/degrees for their positions. The whole process took roughly 8 hours over the course of two days. They are also upfront that they expect everybody to work long hours (people typically work 45-55 hour weeks) for an initial salary barely above minimum wage ($16.25 to start for the first 90 days which they claim will jump up to "Actual Market Value" afterwards, but I can't imagine it being significantly more than the Fast Food starting salary here in town which is $20). The process begins with a Google Doc / Excel test which evaluates whether or not you can follow basic instructions and have simple computer capabilities. This is followed by a typing speed test (1 minute) and then online personality assessment where you simply choose words that describe your work ethic, company values/ideals, etc... from a large list of options. Then you move on to a in-person interview (either with an HR Person or actual Engineer), where they ask typical questions like "Why DPS Telecom?" and "How did you hear about us?". For a Software position you then receive a white board programming challenge in C which is rather basic and probably wouldn't even meet the difficulty criteria for a LeetCode easy question. Next, you take an IQ test which will probably be the most time consuming part of the whole process, and I was told to expect it to take anywhere from 1-3 hours depending on the person. After all of this, you do a final C programming challenge on-site, which I suppose has changed based on older reviews which described this part as a take home assessment. This part has multiple timed parts and is supposed to reflect the actual expectations of your role at DPS, and it can take upwards of three hours. They then tell you after all of this interviewing that they will get back to you, either with an offer or formal rejection. However, like other reviews have noted, it's typical that you won't ever hear back from them if they don't extend you an offer,. This means you can essentially spend two days and 8+ hours of your time just to not be given the decency of a rejection email (which is what happened in my case as well). Not receiving a job offer because you didn't meet the company's standards is one thing, but being ghosted after such a large time commitment speaks volumes about the company's culture. It is also worth noting that, throughout the entire process, everyone I spoke to was brand new, as in they had been there for 3 months or less. With that being the case though, all of these people were very nice and helpful throughout the whole thing, but every time I was supposed to meet with a more senior employee who usually handles the different stages of the interview, they were either absent that day or too busy to speak with me. This unfortunately confirms a trend seen in other reviews where people are constantly in and out of the company due to combinations of low pay, long hours, and unexpected firings (see other reviews for more on this). Sadly, DPS will always have a continuous application pool due to the limited software developer positions available in Fresno, allowing them to continue to get away with practices such as these.
