      Assistant Professor Interview

      Feb 8, 2024
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Crete, NE
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Doane University (Crete, NE) in Nov 2023

      Interview

I was invited to interview for a journalism/media professor position. It was a day-long interview that started out well but ended poorly. The dean was very charming and honest. The chairman of the search committee, another professor, was professional and personable as well. There was one professor, however, who was downright cruel in her approach to asking questions and listening to answers. It seemed she intended to make the interviewee squirm and this went on all day in various different interview groups. I had been asked to prepare a sample lesson for students and a presentation for faculty. Only three students were present, as were all of the adult faculty members who were on the interview committee, so it was not a true representation of what my classes look like. I spent 10 hours preparing those presentations and the one faculty member seemed intent on picking apart my thoughts. It was a terrible experience. The lunch they organized for me was with two students and no one knew where we were supposed to eat. After the lunch, no one came to get me, so I was left to wander around campus and try to find the building in which I was supposed to present. It was also raining. The day concluded with a student who worked in admissions driving me around on a golf cart in the rain for a campus tour. He was also late by 20 minutes or so and appeared to not know he was even supposed to give the tour. This interview took place the Monday before Thanksgiving and here's the kicker: I never heard anything back. No phone call or even email that said "Thank you for joining us on campus and for your application. We've decided to go another direction." In early January, I sent an email to the administrative assistant asking for an update and she said the dean told her to tell me it was still up in the air. I visited their website yesterday and learned that the person who had previously been in the position was back, which makes sense and to be clear after the way I was treated at the interview did not want this job, but I find it so unprofessional that they never even followed up. All this to say, Doane's act isn't very well put together.

      Question 1

They were very interested in my philosophy of things going on in the world. It seemed very esoteric.
