      Software Engineer Interview

      Dec 22, 2019
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Evidation Health

      Interview

Here are the steps for the interview process: 1. Initial 30 min recruiter interview 2. 2 hr long coding test (3 problems to solve) 3. 45 min long technical interview with the hiring manager 4. 1 hr long technical interview with the data engineer (coding included) 5. Onsite interview (4 sessions where 3 sessions have coding) I wasn't given my onsite interview schedule beforehand even though the recruiter mentioned that it would be given before the onsite interview. The hiring manager was very curious about my AWS experience at step 3 and I explained him that I didn't have extensive experience except some beginner level experience. He again brought this issue during the onsite interview and my response was same. If he was too concerned about my AWS experience, then he should have stopped the interview after step 3. Again, he asked lot of NDA type of questions during the onsite interview that was very disturbing, unprofessional. This was a software engineer position where no definitive experience was required. However, it is clear from the interview steps( 1 to 5) that the position requires definitely experience in different domain. Overall, it was a very unprofessional interview experience. It wasted a lot of time.

      Software Engineer Interview

      Apr 11, 2022
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Santa Barbara, CA
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Evidation Health (Santa Barbara, CA) in Mar 2020

      Interview

Interview process was your typical: 1. Initial discussion with recruiter. Very brief, maybe ~15 minutes, just to kind of discuss background and review. 2. Online technical screening. This was performed via Hackerrank, and was timed. Time alloted was very generous.

      Interview questions [5]

      Question 1

You have an SQL table (in your favorite SQL database) that looks like this. | userid | date | city | | ------ | ---------- | -------- | | 1 | 2015-03-01 | Seattle | | 1 | 2015-04-06 | Portland | | 22 | 2015-02-23 | New York | 1. Write a query to count thenumber of rows per month for Seattle. 2. Write a query to identify the month with the most rows for Seattle. 3. What flavor of SQL did you write your above answer in?
      Answer question

      Question 2

Sort these by how long it takes to read one random byte of data: SSD, CPU L2 Cache, S3 (accessed from your laptop), redis*, HDD. * Assume the redis server is running on a separate machine in the same building as your client and that the server and client have a wired ethernet connection between them.
      Answer question

      Question 3

Write a program in a language of your choice to read in two CSVs with the same columns as those below, inner join them on `userid`, and return the joined rows. Instead of two separate `min_score` columns, combine them in a single `min_score` column filled with the min of the `min_scores` from each input CSV. Example: ``` input1.csv userid,age,min_score 1,23,6 6,54,300 2,39,40 input2.csv userid,state,min_score 1,CA,12 6,AK,44 2,WA,100 output.csv userid,age,state,min_score 1,23,CA,6 6,54,AK,44 2,39,WA,40 ```
      Answer question

      Question 4

Imagine we have a system that's responsible for counting the total number of pages viewed on a website. It's a single process on a single machine, and it has a RESTful HTTP API with one endpoint. It looks like this: ``` POST /increment?n=N ``` Whenever this endpoint is hit, the system will increment its internal count by `N`, open its state file on disk, overwrite the state file with the new value of `N`, and close the file. There are many webserver processes on many machines, all calling into this system. Every time a webserver sees a web request, it calls out on the counter system like this: ``` POST /increment?n=1 ``` Please answer the following: 1. Unsurprisingly, the system is having trouble keeping up. What steps would you take to improve the throughput of the system? 2. Are there any tradeoffs you consider as you take those steps?
      Answer question

      Question 5

Imagine you just logged into a Linux server to check on how your data pipeline is running. You notice that a resource intensive job that is usually CPU bound and takes an hour to run has been running for 8 hours. What could have happened? List your top several hypotheses. For each hypothesis, exactly how do you test it? What tools do you use?
