      U S FIeld Organizer Interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Global Zero in Jul 2014

      Interview

The interview process is comprehensive to say the least. The first step is submitting a cover letter, resume and writing sample via email. After that, you would then be scheduled for a phone call as an introductory screening interview to see if Global Zero is interested in conducting a full interview (over skype). After the Skype interview, which is 1.5 hours long but does not include any surprising questions, they will let you know within a week if they want you to continue the process and submit a written exercise. The exercise presents a scenario in which the applicant must describe a recruitment plan for a movie screening and the signing-up for 1-2 fully committed volunteers with 2 weeks notice. This is where it got wonky. A friend who completed the process said that after this step, the staff advisor requested 3 names for recommendation and a final interview with a higher level staff manager before she was offered the position. I was in talks about the second interview when Global Zero fell off the map. I did not hear from them for 3 weeks, and it turned out that they had changing priorities and strategic targets (totally understandable), and that they would not be hiring for the west coast organizer position until the end of 2014 (I started the interview process in July). They have kept my information and application materials on file, and I periodically check in via email, but it has become an overly long and frustrating process. While they truly vet their new employees, the lack of consistency in communication left me feeling devalued as an applicant (even though they were investing the resources in rigorously interviewing me) and made Global Zero seem disorganized. It is now January 2015 and they are still technically considering my application. The organization does great work, but the hiring process leaves a lot to be desired.

      Question 1

None of the questions were particularly challenging if you have experience with organizing and volunteer work.
