Director of Marketing and Products Interview

      Jul 19, 2019
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Nashville, TN
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Good Dye Young (Nashville, TN)

      Interview

This interview experience was not at all what I was expecting. Within the first five minutes, the interviewer (I believe he introduced himself as the president of the company) criticized the owners, complained about her lack of commitment and professionalism, and quickly set the tone for the rest of the interview. He then complained about the “twenty seven year old millennial” who ran the social media campaign, and insulted their intelligence. I was stunned and found myself stuttering over responses. He asked me a few pointed questions about my current job, and he clearly wasn’t very sure of the different roles in the beauty industry. He then informed me that the last person who had this role was sorely missed, irreplaceable, and no candidate so far had what it took to fill her shoes. In an effort to direct the conversation to a more productive route, I asked about what the position would entail. The interviewer then rattled off a very long list of responsibilities that in no way reflected the job listing. This was another red flag. The final red flag was when he dropped his pen dramatically, closed and rubbed his eyes, leaned back in the chair and asked “I mean, have you ever even dyed your hair? How would you know anything about our products?” I politely explained that my hair is currently dyed (balayage, highlights, and a shadow root) and that I had fashion colors in my hair for many years prior this style. The entire operation seemed messy, unprofessional, and gave me a very bad taste in my mouth for the company. I ultimately decided to stay at my current role, as this seemed to be too much to deal with on a day to day basis. I left the interview feeling sorry for the owners, as there’s no way they were aware of how this man was speaking of them and their company to other beauty industry professionals. Hopefully after some growth, they will learn to either replace this person or have some one else do the interviewing.
