      Senior Consultant Interview

      May 22, 2023
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      San Jose, San Jose
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Headstorm (San Jose, San Jose) in Mar 2023

      Interview

First, there was a phone screening, then there was a technical interview split into two parts. The first part was a data structures and algorithms exercise. The second part was a case study and software architecture question, in which you need to go into detail on all areas related on building a certain piece of software for a client. Once that interview was over, I was scheduled for the last interview which was with an architect at Headstorm. This final interview is mostly cultural/executive and doesn't require you to put your hard skills to use, they will evaluate your soft skills under different questions. After that I was offered a Senior Consultant II position for $3600 monthly. Usually one must try to negotiate in order to gain a fairer deal at companies, but the recruiters were extremely hesitant about this. When I sent a better potential range for negotiation, the company went radio silent for about a week, before replying back to me that they reviewed this with the SLT and were unable to provide a better offer. I verbally accepted the offer and provided all details in order for them to send me the official document to sign, but this time Headstorm agreed and said they would reach back within 2 days. Turns out they went radio silent for another week, only for the recruiter to contact me and deliver the bad news; Headstorm didn't have any more capacity (i.e. budget) for new hires, so they decided to rescind several offers (including mine). Fortunately I hadn't delivered my notice period by then and I also had several other job offers lined up from other places, however it makes you think of potential what if's for less experienced candidates, in which they likely faced a lame duck situation, where they quit their old company and Headstorm suddenly rescinded their job offer at the very last minute, something which is extremely unprofessional from the company and a massive waste of time for the candidates. For future candidates, take all of this into account and also DYOR. For less experienced candidates, keep tabs on your job offer and DO NOT deliver any notice unless you got something on paper from their end.

Thank you for taking the time to provide detailed feedback regarding your interview experience with Headstorm. We are truly sorry to hear that you had a disappointing experience; and we deeply regret the inconveniences you experienced. The interviewing process you detailed is accurate and we aim for it to provide a great experience and to obtain a comprehensive understanding of skills, capabilities, and cultural fit for both the company and the candidates. We understand that communication should be transparent and timely and it is clear we fell short for your experience. We are taking your feedback very seriously and we are reviewing our processes to ensure that negotiations are handled in a more prompt and respectful manner. Regarding the rescinding of the job offer, we deeply apologize for this unfortunate situation. The circumstances that led to the withdrawal of your offer were unique and purely related to unforeseen circumstances. Please understand that your verbal offer was the only one extended without follow through. We acknowledge the potential hardships and anxieties this could cause, especially for candidates who may not have other job offers at hand. We are reviewing our hiring practices to prevent similar situations in the future. We are grateful for your constructive feedback, and we will use it to improve our recruitment processes moving forward. We wish you the best in your professional journey and hope our paths might cross again under more favorable circumstances.
