      Staff Engineer Interview

      Jan 17, 2023
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      London, England
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Healios (London, England) in Jan 2023

      Interview

Recruiter screen, hiring manager screen, technical challenge comprising a pop quiz on programming followed by a basic systems design question. Final stage is a panel presenting to EMs and CTO. The hiring manager screen left me with a really positive impression of the company, and was the most enjoyable part of the process, which left me eager to proceed to technical. In the technical stage they purported to be assessing for communication, technical skills, collaboration, critical thinking, senior and values alignment. Unfortunately I didn't pass the technical interview, and the quality of feedback was poor - it was shallow, not related to the points they said they were assessing, and not actionable, despite asking a few times - I'm always keen for constructive feedback. Instead they suggested that I would be more suitable for a different role and asked if I wanted to proceed in that direction. Overall the candidate experience was quite poor as the recruiter didn't even try to build a relationship throughout the process, it was purely transactional. As a result, I opted to not continue the process.

      Interview questions [2]

      Question 1

Why do you like Python? (yes - really)
      Answer question

      Question 2

You have a report generation UI (backed by Rails/Postgres) that has poor performance, causing your application to hang. How would you improve this?

Thank you for taking the time to give feedback. I am sorry to read that you did not feel you gained constructive feedback, as this is something we pride ourselves in. We track all elements of candidate’s interview processes on our Applicant Tracking System and would be more than happy to set up a follow-up call with you to give any additional feedback. Our TA Lead for Tech & Product would love to hear from you lauren.hall@healios.org.uk.
